Emsisoft Anti-Malware Free

It was brought to my attention that the free version of the latest EAM per se is no longer available for download. One can only download a free 30-day trial of the full paid version. As many here know, I have used and championed EAM Free as a backup scanner for years (and continue to do so). The problem with the full trial version is that it now includes a real-time AV from BitDefender, as well as a real-time Emsisoft Anti-malware module.  The potential for conflicts with your current AV and anti-malware programs is real.

The free trial of the full EAM will revert to the free version of EAM (on-demand scans/removal only) after 30 days, but you don't want to have more than one AV or Anti-malware running in real-time in the interim. Fortunately there is a workaround:

1) Download the latest installer version (7.0.0.21) of  EAM to your desktop from here:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/download/
2) Current users of EAM Free should uninstall the previous version, reboot and do a clean install using the latest installer you just downloaded.
3) During the installation, on the page entitled "Emsisoft ANTI-MALWARE" you will be offered the "30 days free trial", or "I have a license key", and in smaller print below "Freeware mode (scanner only, no protection)."
4) Click on the "Freeware mode" link, and finish the instructions from the setup wizard.
5) You now should have the free version of EAM, with nothing in it running in real-time.

I have confirmed that the above works for both Win7 and XP.

(Hat-tip to Bugbatter, for alerting me to this potential problem).

Thanks ky.

The Emsi website has also announced the release of 7.0.0.25, and I have downloaded its installer. The conditions do not appear to have changed from my first post. The default installation is still a 30-day free trial of the full version, real-time AV and all:

Major Geeks does a real disservice when it describes EAM: "Emsisoft Anti-Malware Free edition is a complementary product to antivirus software". This certainly was true at one time, but no longer (at least for the first 30 days). Current users of EAM free (on-demand only)  however can update to this latest version via the internal updater, with all settings kept intact. New users will still have to use the installation workaround if they want to avoid duelling AVs.
