Error Loading Issue - Hijackthis log
I was directed by some kind soul on another message board to post a log created by hijackthis here. My original post is first followed by the log. Thanks to anyone who can help decipher this mess.
Help! I get the following error message every 1-2 minutes. Its driving me nuts. It just started today:
RUNDLL
Error Loading C:\PROGRA~1\Internet
The specific module cannot be found
Everything seems to operate normally except for this anoying pest. I have tried some of the message boards remedies to no avail; spybot, adaware and even restarting with the above file unchecked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I fear I may take a hammer to this machine before I find the rememdy!

Save the hammer...your brain and mine is much better. Computers are smart...people are infinitely smarter.
Looks like you have a brand new baddie:

Too bad you have McAfee...their engineers must be sleeping this weekend...oh well...I will see what we can do manually.

>I was not able to find a file windows\system\blank.htm
but I deleted all others
That's OK..we'll have to use CWS Shredder later...the Trojan is still there so we'll try again...
got to kill the main baddie:
Reboot in Safe Mode and run Hijackthis from there. Scan and select the following entries with a check, then fix checked button.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000000-0000-41a3-98CF-00000000168B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wm41a398.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000000-0000-47c5-A90F-2CDE8F7638DB} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\iel2cde8.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wm41a398] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wm41a398.dll,EnableRunDLL32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iel2cde8] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\iel2cde8.dll,EnableRunDLL32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nssysconf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvtchrn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [000hpdllhost] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpdllhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [he3e3fc4] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\he3e3fc4.dll,EnableRunDLL32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icdd7ee6] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\icdd7ee6.dll,EnableRunDLL32
Exit Hijackthis, Open Windows Explorer, Hidden Files Enabled, and drill down into and delete the following:
C:\Windows\System32\rundll.exe (file mentioned in the Symantec article...not in HJT log)
C:\Windows\System32\rundll.dll (file mentioned in the Symantec article...not in HJT log)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wm41a398.dll file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\iel2cde8.dll file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvtchrn.exe file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpdllhost.exe file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\he3e3fc4.dll file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\icdd7ee6.dll file
Special detective work for you:
While you are in Windows\System32 look for Edit:
rundll32.dllMake that rundll32.exe... if found do this: right button click on it and and left button click on the word Properties in the popup window. Left click on the Version tab and then left click on these Item Names: Company and File Version entries. In the Value box does it say Microsoft Corporation and 5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148) for the Value? The reason I ask is this file is reported by the Symantec write-up in part one of the Technical Details as being placed by the Trojan in that folder and yet the Edit:
rundll32.dllrundll32.exe is a legitimate Windows file so I wonder if it overwrites that file with a hostile version (or maybe Symantec made an error). So don't delete that file (I asked you to the first time and on hindsight I am wondering about that...did you find the file the first time and try to delete it? Questions..questions...*;-)Close Windows Explorer and follow these steps: (From Symantec instructions for removing the Trojan):
Backup the Windows Registry:
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.
Click Advanced Mode.
On the Welcome tab, click the Backup Wizard (Advanced) button.
Click Next.
Select Only back up the System State data, and then click next.
Click the Browse button.
Click Cancel if the "Insert Disk" warning message pops up.
In the Save As dialog box, choose a location to save your registry back up.
Click Save.
Click Next.
Review the information in this window. Your Contents should say "Back up only the system state." Click Finish.
When the back up completes click Close.
Your registry is now backed up. You may close the Backup Utility window
Click Start, and then click Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)
Type regedit
Then click OK. (The Registry Editor opens.)
Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In the right pane, delete the value:
"MSTray"="%System%\rundll.exe"
Reboot in normal mode to Windows and run a fresh Hijackthis log and post it here.
All the best,
Texruss

Tex
I succesfully 'fixed' all the deliniated files using hijackthis in safe mode. Not one of the files in the 2nd group could be found using windows explorer, so none from the 2nd list were there to be deleted. Niether was there a rundll32.dll file. Lastly I was not able to find the Backup mode. In the path Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools there was no Backup mode that I could find. I tried to find how to access it using help and have found references to it but not how to access it. (One of the reasons my laptop is a Mac - finding stuff on Windows seems to always be a pain and never intuitive, unless you were once a DOS geek) Your help and expertise has been greatly appreciated. All computer functions at this time seem to be normal but I would certainly like to root out this evil if its still in there. I feel contaminated, if you know what I mean :)

>Neither was there a rundll32.dll file
Good...because it was there it was a virus. *;-0
I must have had a bad biorhythm day yesterday...see my edit in previous message...I meant rundll32.exe file as the one to check. (I'd blame it on too much Dutch beer Saturday night, but I just had one Heineken at the Texas Roadhouse, so I can't lay it on that.)
>;-)
There is a Backup method for XP, but you may mean the System Restore feature. Look it up in Start button/Help and Support for an overview.
I'll be glad to continue slugging it out with your problem if you'll post a new HJT log. I might even bring in the big gun for MY backup (Chris) *;-)
All the best,

Texruss,
I did not find rundll.exe either. Here is the latest hijackthis log. I ran the scan after a normal boot up. BTW I rechecked the Runddl.exe file in safe mode just prior to rebooting just to make sure. Thanks.

Looking much better!
Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate box and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
Reboot, browse a bit and see if you can set a new home page (Tools\Internet Options\Home Page) and run a fresh log.
Cheers,

Texruss, Here's the latest. I 'fixed' the required file, rebooted, changed the home page to apple.com :) and the ran the scan. I noticed that when I right clicked on explorer and selected properties I got the following notice:
Control Panel
Windows cannot find 'rundll32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Here's the log:

Edit: see comments at top of that page for installation notes.
Log looks good.

The instruction at "0x0041f000" referenced memory at "0x000b92c0". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate Click on Cancel to debug
I am not very computer literate. This box pops up about every minute. is this related to this forum? is this possibly a virus issue? thanks for any help.

Probably not, but it's possible. Repost in a new topic here or in the Windows Software forum. Don't crosspost in another person's thread. *;-)
Canned public service announcement:
All New posters:
This is planebill's thread (original poster).
Please Repost your starter topic in the Main Index. One person per thread...that's the policy we must insist on as too many victims in one thread makes for a disjointed and confusing mess nobody can understand now or later. We are volunteers and need some control over the threads.
Click on the link below for the Main Index and repost your message with a new topic.
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/post?board.id=si_virus
BTW...I'm not mad at anyone who crossposts, so I'll be glad to help you when you repost. Be aware we have only a handful of Hijackthis experts here (all volunteers with "real" jobs elsewhere *;-) for suggested fixes for Hijackthis logs and we answer posts in chronological order starting back with the oldest unanswered posts. Be patient as it may be a while before your turn comes up.
All the best,
Texruss
