I run Norton SystemWorks 2004 Professional and Norton Personal Firewall 2004 on my desktop and on my notebook.

If you boot the PC and load the desktop too soon then it seems that Norton throws out a bunch of red 'X's as if to say "I'm not ready yet!".

I find that when I boot the PC, I need to wait until just after the floppy drive is accessed the 2nd time BEFORE I can click OK ( or click the user icon) to load the desktop.

On the notebook, I watch the hard drive light. Once it becomes idle then I can click OK ( or click the user icon) to load the desktop.

If you have set up your PC to bypass the login and load the desktop then this won't help.

Why wait to load the desktop? As far as I can tell Symantec is most happy when the majority of the services that run in the background have loaded - before the desktop appears. Also LiveUpdate wants internet access within about 5 seconds of Norton's icon appearing on the system tray.

Waiting about 20 - 30 seconds is a pain, but it seems to work.

The 20-30 second waiting period did the trick for me. It does help keep the red out. :smileyhappy:

VBdotNet is correct.
I found this true with 2003 which I still run and is up todate.
Just a thought....why don't you have Norton load with your startup items?
I do and that problem with the red check on the email never happens and it used to happen to me also for the same reason we are discussing here.
So I just added it to the bootup items. You will notice if you do this, the sequence in which the progams launch, is such that Norton is the last to launch automatically at bootup.

I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the replies!  I do have it set up to load at start up and had checked for updates from Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&D, and Ad-aware before I clicked on the the Norton icon. Maybe it was "calling home" to mom and was not ready for me yet!  Working fine now.  :smileyvery-happy:
