Question

Norton found this on my computer C:\WINDOWS\system\msdirectx.sys   HACKTOOL.ROOTKIT I also found 6 quarantined items which are: backdoor.sdbot and 5 trojan horses Norton also says that I have a security risk of dialer.wsv they also have backup items of trojan vundo, download.trojan and w32.dedler.worm   Should I be seriously concerend with all these things? How do i get rid of it or fix it? I also ran a HJT log file just in case you need. My norton internet security version is 2005 antispyware edition. Thanks for the help! I'm also thinking of changing my antivirus software to mcafee. is norton better..should i stick with it..and how can i avoid future unwanted spyware! Looks like Norton has kept anything bad from running. It should allow you to delete everything it has quarantined. If it flags stuff and doesn't delete it for you then you can use killbox to get rid of it.

Download the killbox:

Extract it to your desktop and run it and delete any files that norton flagged but could not remove. Check the Delete on Reboot option if it can't delete it immediately.

In your log you only have a few minor things.

You can check these then Fix Checked but they are just leftover entries in the registry:

Dialers usually attempt to call 900 numbers which can run up your telephone bill if you connect via a dialup. Not much they can do if you use a different setup like cable modem or DSL.

Can't tell you which is better Norton or McAfee.

Most antivirus programs work better in Safe Mode when the infection may not be running.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Then run your antivirus program.

General recommendations:

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On and create a new restore point today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new. You can then google any entry that shows up and see if it's bad or not.
