Help! My computer is acting wierd.

I have  problem with my computer.  The window I am in won't stay active.  Outlook Express works some of the time.  Yahoo Games doesn't work.  The IM programs work but the windows don't stay active.  And offline games such as Civilization and Sims don't work.  I have installed Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy and run both programs.  They have fixed some things but the system still doesn't run correctly.  Please let me know if anyone out there can help.  We can connect to the internet okay.

Please download a program called hijack this and install it in its own directory.  Please run the executable, the first time it will give a pop up, click ok, in the main window, please click "Scan".  once you do that, please click "Save log" which will save in a .log file.  copy and paste the contents of that log file here in its entirety.  we can go from there.  i'd like to see what programs are running that might explain the problem.

This
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0428FFC7-1931-45b7-95CB-3CBB919777E1} - (no file)
Is an orphaned entry - can be fixed in hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winhlp32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\winhlp32.exe
May be this virus
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.lovit.html

But it seems to be in the wrong location - could you find that file in windows explorer, right click, properties and copy the info given please so we know what it is - legit or bad.

You could run a online AV scan :-
On my site (Link Below) try the AV section and one of the online virus checkers, such as housecall. You could also try McAfee's stinger too From Here

This is the only file I could find that looked like this.

WINHLP32.EXE-2EAA5C15.pf

Properties

Type of file: PF File

Opens with: Unknown application

Location: C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

Size: 17.7 KB (18,128 bytes)

Size on disk: 20.0 KB (20,480 bytes)

Hope this is the right file.  I couldn't find one in Windows\Download

Well I have four of that file name, two are in 'ServicePack' areas and are for backup purposes.

File = winhlp32.exe

The main ones

c:\windows - - 261kb 19/8/2002 (when this machine was installed) - Description - 'Microsoft(c) Help'

c:\windows\system32 - - 8kb 18/08/2001 - description -' windows winhlp32 stub'

Ignor the one in prefetch, which is there only when a file has been used.

Any others should be deleted - from safe mode.

In windows explorer, folder options, view, show hidden files and folders, is marked -
also uncheck 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'
NOTE this will make some files viewable on the desktop - this is normal - do not be worried - remember when finished to turn this back off.

Then use the start search for that file name and ensure it also 'search hidden files and folders' is checked.

Then post a fresh hijackthis log for me.

That file while I opened it tried to install and alter my startup programs list - so it sounds like the baddie.

I will let some experts have a go at looking at it. And let you know what to do.

PLEASE edit the previous message to remove that link to the file - i would not like people to accidently click and install on thier systems.

I did find one in the Windows/download called

Reactivator Class

Type:  Active X Control

ID:  {6C31790D-1EDF-4B05-83DC-925B3A8E2318}

Would that be it?

Thanks for the edit.

BTW that file was unable to install on my system - Both Spybot S&D (Teatimer feature) and Winpatrol came to my defence. Links to both on my website below.

Have sent that file by zipped email to experts for them to check. Will advise when they let me know if it was bad.

Okay, I lied.  Things are not working all right.  Here is my log.  It still seems to have that winhlp32.exe file in there.  And when I did a search, I did come up with lovit32 as a html.  So let me know how to get rid of this thing.  Symantec gave instructions to delete the file in safe mode, and then "remove values that the virus added to the registry."  I don't know what that means.  Then it said to change the name of Essdrv.exe to winhlp32.exe and restore some files from backup.   Hope what you tell me is easier!

>Symantec gave instructions to delete the file in safe mode, and then "remove values that the virus added to the registry."  I don't know what that means.

From their webpage: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.lovit.html

"To remove the values that the virus added to the registry:

CAUTION: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document How to make a backup of the Windows registry for instructions.

Click Start, and click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens."   etc...etc...etc...
*******************************************************************************************

I would suggest you get a knowledgeable friend who can help use the regedit tool for you and follow those instructions on that webpage...while technical, they are as about as simple as the subject matter allows. As a professional writer, I couldn't do much better myself (well, maybe a little). *;-)

If you didn't have Norton AV I would try to rewrite it for you...but since you have it, then it can be done easily with perhaps a friendly high school geek to help you. I can place C:\Windows\Command\Deltree.exe
C:\Windows\Help\Live.hlp on my website for a private download if you get in a bind there. Just let me know.

All the best,

Texruss
