Help Please, with network changing it's name

My wireless network name was changed to hacked. I don't know when or how. But now I have to use that named network to connect to the internet.  This is the third time this has happened. Can anyone explain what is going on and why?  What can I do to prevent this from occurring again?

1cammy,

Tell me more about your wireless network, including the wireless router (and it's current security settings) your using, any anti-virus or firewall software your using.

we just have a single laptop  hooked up to dsl via the phone line along with a dell truemobile wireless router. after your reply, went to "network connections", then "wireless ","properties "and did notice the box that says internet connection firewall was unchecked.could this have been the reason?Have Norton antivirus installed but it never found this. This intrusion gives us the creeps

1cammy,

Yes, it very well could be. It's kinda hard to explain in a short space how, without running a firewall, a system can be compromised, but trust me, it can.

Let's see if there's something that's actually running on your computer that shouldn't be; post up a HiJackThis log for review.

I'd also recommend:

1) Using  a 3-rd party firewall like ZoneAlarm (free version)
2) Getting upto date on critical patches for Windows.
3) Using anti-virus software.
4) Using some form of security for your wireless signal if your living in, let's say a condo or apartment.
