Help please!

had problem when vista loaded my username or any other it would only open my documents and no desktop or start menu and was advised to run hijack this and post the log in here for further assistance, the machin is a Dell E521

1. We need to be able to see hidden files and folders
  • Click Start (The Vista Icon)
    Control Panel ->> Folder Options
    After the new window appears select the View tab.
    Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
    Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
    Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
    Click Yes To confirm
    Press the Apply button and then the OK button.

2. We need to disable Windows Defender (You can re-enable when we are done)
  • Click Start (The Vista Icon)
    Control Panel
    Windows Defender
    Select Tools ->> And uncheck " Automatically scan my computer"
    Yes to confirm and close Windows Defender and Control Panel


3. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
  • F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [snpstd] C:\Windows\vsnpstd.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Internet Services] C:\Windows\WinVNC.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [winupdate] winupdate.exe
Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select " Fix checked"

And close Hijackthis

4. Using Windows Explorer
  • Rt Click the Start Buttton (The Vista Icon) ->> Explore, and you will see the "tree' of file folders in the left side of the window.

Locate and Delete the following files ( Note: In Vista the file names will not show with an .exe extention. They will appear as
C:\Windows\in this folder, the file name, and in the type column Application)
  • C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe
    C:\Windows\vsnpstd.exe
    C:\Windows\WinVNC.exe
Close Windows Explorer ->> Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

hey, this is the log after i followed the instructions, just one thing, i couldnt find WINDOWS\Config or the file which i was meant to delete in the folder. windows rebooted and still had to run explorer to get desktop etc up.

That's because the fix didn't work. Did you have any trouble removing the files (other than the one you couldn't find)?

Let's do this:

Go HERE and Download System Repair Engine by smallfrogs
Select Local Download1 or 2
  • Save it to your Desktop
    Rt Click sreng2.zip->>Extract all->>Extract it to your desktop
    Open the sreng folder
    Double click SREng->>Click Run
    At the main Window, in the left Pane,Select Smart Scan
    At the next window make sure all of the boxes are checked and Select Scan
    When the scan is complete Select Save reports
    Save it to your desktop and Close the tool
    Double Click SREngLog.txt copy and paste that log as a reply to this thread

Do not run any other options with this tool unless instructed to do so.
