Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT. 
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder.  
When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" if present. It will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

I'm wondering if the

Sorry -- everytime i reboot, it also seems to restore whatever old settings prior.  I'm wondering if it is something that resets it back to that stupid homepage when i reboot.

Last thing that i can bring up is ...\explorer, but no doc find spec mru. there is a streammru folder, which has:

I am having the same problem! I just got it, everytime i type in a site it sends me to their stupid search engine, gah! I typed smartsearch.ws help on google and this site came up and it looks like the first poster is having the same problems as me. PLEASE HELP!!!!! I followed all the steps and it's not working =(

Use the Task Manager Ctrl+Alt+Del to terminate explore.exe 

Delete  C:\Windows\explore.exe

Follow above instructions.

Open a DOS window by going to Start then All Programs then Accessories then Command Prompt.

Enter the following commands without quotes and depress Enter:

"cd \windows\system32"  this should take you to the C:\widows\system32 folder

"copy taskmgr.exe taskmgr1.exe" this will make an alternate copy of the Task Manager

"taskmgr1"  the Task Manger should come up and you can terminate explore.exe

"cd \windows"  this should take you to the C:\windows folder

"del explore.exe" be very carefull with the spelling as this will delete the file and not send it to the Recycle Bin

"exit" to close the window

Continue with the above instructions.
