Hello Mikey,

Mikeymike,

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done ' cleaning' off your system, we're going to ' flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

If you don't already have it, download, install and run AdAware SE Personal.

-

Next, check for, and download any available updates:

1.  click "Check for updates now".
2.  Click "Connect".
3.  If updates(definitions) are available click "Ok", otherwise, click "Ok".
4.  Click "Finish".

-

Next, configure AdAware to be as effective as possible:

1.  Click the 'gear' in the upper-right hand corner of the AdAware Window.
2.  Click Scanning, and check(tick) the following:

    Scan within archives
    Scan active processes
    Scan registry
    Deep-scan registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
    Scan my Hosts file

3.  Click "Tweak".
4.  Click "Scanning Engine", then check(tick) the following:

Unload recognized proceses & modules during scan

5.  Click "Cleaning Engine", then check(tick) then following:

Always try to unload modules before deletion
During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
Let Winodws remove files in use at next reboot
    Delete quarantined objects after retoring

6.  Then click "Proceed"

-

Now, let AdAware locate and remove anything it finds, by:

1.  Click "Start".
2.  Check(tick) "perform full system scan".
3.  Click "Next".

-

Exit the program.

If you don't already have it, download, install and run Spybot S & D. Next, update the current definitions by:

-

Next, check for, and download any available updates:

1. Click "Search for Updates".
2. Check(tick) all available updates.
3. Click "Download Updates".
4. Click "Search & Destroy".
5. Click "Check for Problems".

-

When the scan is completed:

1. Check(tick) everything that was found.
2. Click "Fix selected problems".

-

Click "Ok", then exit the program.

When running an Ewido scan no windows or programs should be open!. Do not use the Computer while the Ewido scan is running!

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update; click the "OK" button
The program will now go to the main screen
Update ewido:
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please review how to see hidden files in Windows.
How to see hidden files in Windows.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Little confused.  How do I make the 'hijackthis' file it's own.  You mentioned that I have got this file in the wrong place.

When I click on the C:/ (drive) and search for the HJT file, it can be retrieved.

How can I make it C:/HJT    ?

Please help.

Thanks.

Hello Mikey,

Here is a good tutorial that may help you.

I think this has worked.  The computer is running fine and without any of the horrible pop ups like before, including winfixer2005.

Thank you so much.  I will certainly be making a donation.

Just one more question though.

Shall I or can I delete the 'Spyboot D & S' and the 'Ewido security suite'?  Or is it best to keep them to perform regular scans (if so, how often)?

Thank you again.

Mikey

Hello Mikey

You have this one entry in your log that I would like to see deleted.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FNI.WFX5CP_0001_0817] "C:\Documents and Settings\Mel\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4NLRM27P\WinFixer2005Install[1].exe"

Go to the Start =>Internet Explorer =>Tools=>Internet Options

Look for the “Temporary Internet Files” Check offline content.

Click the “Delete Files” tab

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FNI.WFX5CP_0001_0817] "C:\Documents and Settings\Mel\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4NLRM27P\WinFixer2005Install[1].exe"

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Slight problem.   The 04 - HKLM.............winfixer2005Install(1).exe will not delete.

After I ran the 'hijackthis' scan and checked the relevant listed item with a tick, I clicked on the 'fix checked' box, the following 'hijackthis' window appears:

- Unexpected error occurred!

Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe).

Please send a report to merijn@spyware.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of windows you have.

This message has been copied to your clip board.

OK.

After I clicked 'OK' to get rid of this error message, I scanned again, but the winfixer installer is still present?

Hello Mikey

C:\DOCUME~1\Mel\LOCALS~1\ Temp\Temporary Directory 3 for HJT.zip\HijackThis.exe

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done ' cleaning' off your system, we're going to ' flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.
Also move the " Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

Download and install CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/.  Don't run it yet.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FNI.WFX5CP_0001_0817] "C:\Documents and Settings\Mel\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4NLRM27P\WinFixer2005Install[1].exe"
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Note: The CCleaner will delete temporary files so you will lose your current hijackthis log unless you moved it.
Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in the Prefetch folder, but do not delete the Prefetch folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner

Please post another hijackthis log.

Hello Mikey,

Let's try this.

Download Pocket Killbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. DO NOT RUN IT YET.

Copy the following list to the Clipboard.

C:\Documents and Settings\Mel\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4NLRM27PWinFixer2005Install[1].exe

Start Pocket Killbox, it is the red circle with a large white X in it. Click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. Click on the "File" menu and select "Paste from Clipboard". One of the files from the list under the last point should show in the window under "Full Path of File to Delete". Click the little arrow next to the window and check that the only entry above is present.

Click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you to confirm the delete. Answer yes.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot. Answer yes.
Let the system reboot.

Please post another hijackthis log.  I am sorry you are getting an error with it but maybe we will see the entry eliminated.

Tried kill box, but after I ran hijackthis, the log is still showing 'winfixer2005......etc'.  When I try and tick and delete by clicking 'fix selected' it still comes up with:

Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe).
Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

Hello Mikey,

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option # 1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT:  Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Having opened the newly added l2mfix folder on my desktop, I couldn't find the file l2mfix.bat to double click.  There is a file called 12mfix which is an MS-DOS batch file.  Not sure if this is it?
