HELP

Question

Hi- I recently have encountered a very annoying problem. Starting 2 days ago, whenever I would try to load IE6, I'd see hrglass, but the program wouldn't load. This is an off again/ onagain problem. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. Also, when I shut down or restart, windows xp tells me 'iexplore not responding' and gives me the option to 'end now'. I can open IE6 at times, though. Weird. A few things of note: One, I DID receive a notice from McAfee virusscan that it detected something bad and advised me to run a scan. I did, and found 6 trojans that had something to do w/ Java someting or other. I deleted them. I also have run SpySweeper, SpyBot, and Ad-Aware. They found a few cookies here and there, nothing major. PS- I can browse using Outlook, MS Money, etc. Dell chat support was totally unhelpful- they just said this is definitely a spyware problem- so run spysweepers. I can't argue with 'em there, but spysweepers seem to be of no avail in killing this thing. I am at a loss now as to what to do. I don't know a lot about computers, and I am getting more frustrated by the minute as it's a crapshoot if IE6 will start or not when I need it. I heard that this forum can help with knotty spyware issues. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.   -Alan

Not Taking Ownership:

Alan....go to the post by Chris directly below yours and follow the steps shown there if you are able to. If need be, download HJT and run it and post a scan back in this SAME thread. Might be spyware/malware on your computer causing the problem you describe, but could be other things. But first we need to know if your machine is clean. Good luck. Dale

Dale,   I just wanted to let you know, that many of the experts scan the listing of HJT logs, specifically looking for those which have zer0 responses.   So, when you (or I) try to 'help' someone,  the count goes positive --- and as a result,  they can wind-up being neglected  :-(   consequently, i'm doing my best NOT to reply in the HJT forum, working instead in the virus/spyware forum.  but, on those occasions when I DO reply in the hJT forum, i also make it a point to send a private message to one (or more) of the experts, to alert them to the log.  I'll do what I can to get one of them to look at this one.   by the way, i was 'forced' to contact you here, as apparently you have disabled your private messages. Hi and welcome,

Nothing major wrong with your log.

That problem that you are experienceing with IE6 is not spyware related. I get those same error messages when I use Firefox and try exiting it sometimes

Here are a couple of entries that need to be attended to.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Reboot and post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Tried it. IE6 seems to load ok, but it does still start to load then peter outa few times here and there. Is it possible to uninstall/reinstall or repair IE6? Thanks.

steve- BTW, just installed Netscape 8.0. It's LOAAADDSS better than IE6- it even seems faster. I'd still like to know if IE can be reinstalled/repaired. thanks.   -Alan
