Looks like AntiVermin to me.  You can try rogueremover

It claims to get it.  Just to make sure run SmitfraudFix like they do here.

Don't worry that you don't have the same symptoms.  I just want you to run the smitfraudfix and then come back with a new HJT log.

So I did all that and AVG Anti-Spyware now finds only 18 threats instead of 176.  It lists them as:

Adware.SaveNow
Adware.NewDotNet
TrackingCookie.Tracking101
TrackingCookie.2o7
TrackingCookie.YieldManage
TrackingCookie.Adbrite
TrackingCookie.Euroclick

Should I be worried about these?  Nothing is popping up, my homepage and IE toolbar have been restored, and the system seems to be running okay, but these threats make me kind of nervous.

Here is my latest Hijack This log:

You can ignore the tracking cookies.  I don't see any sign of newdotnet or SaveNow in your log so it's probably just a left over entry somewhere.  You can try the steps on this page to see if you can uninstall them.

Otherwise I think we got it all.

Log looks very good now. I don't see any problems. I recommend you do a disk cleanup.
This will clean up your temp files and also remove any old copies of the malware that might be hiding in the System Restore archives.

Disk Cleanup:

1.Open My Computer, right-click Local Disk, and then click Properties.
2.On the General tab, click the Disk Cleanup button. Disk Cleanup will spend a few minutes examining your disk.
Check everything but the one where it offers to compress little used files, the one about Setup logs and the one about Cookies and then OK. Takes a while so be patient.

It appears you are not uptodate on your Java which is very important. Get the latest version from Java:

http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Make sure you do not have any older versions. Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and make sure there is only one program jre1.5.0_10 that has the java coffee cup as its icon. If you see any other remove them. They usually have names that start with msjava, java, jre, j2re, jse.

If you run HJT one more time and check everything that comes up then ADD TO IGNORE LIST, it will take them out of the list so the next time you do a scan you will only see what is new. A few entries will be hidden by other good entries so you may need to do the add to ignore bit twice in order to have a clean scan. This will make it easier to see if you get a new infection. (Everything that HJT finds new will not necessarily be evil. If in doubt, google for the .dll or .exe file and see if CastleCops or BleepingComputer or one of the antivirus companies like it/hate it. Be warned that some sites will tell you that everything is malware and then try to sell you their snake oil program).

I like to run one of the online free scanners like:

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

just to make sure we didn't miss anything. These sometimes find Tracking Cookies which are really nothing to worry about.

Also

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition

Spybot search and destroy

The above will find a lot of Tracking Cookies so don't panic. Tracking Cookies are normal and are just removed as a privacy thing.

Good references for preventing new infection by blocking your PC's ability to visit known bad sites:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Make sure your firewall is working and that you have all of your updates and are set to get them automatically. You can check the firewall with:

Start, Run, cmd, OK to bring up a new black cmd screen. Type:

net start

(Then examine the list to see if you find:

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

If you don't see it then it's not running. I've always used the free version of Zone Alarm anyway instead of the Windows Firewall but lately I've started using Comodo.  Seems to be a bit stabler.

If you click on Tools in IE and Windows Update it should go to the Windows Update site. It will tell you if you have automatic updates set and also offer you any updates it thinks you need. I'd do the Express option first then come back and do it again (sometimes the patches they give you require new patches) and finally do the Custom option and see if there are any non critical updates that make sense to you. (Obviously we don't need the improved Chinese version) Usually the Drivers are a good idea and most of the updates to XP. I have no use for .net so I never bother with those upgrades.

If you run Adobe acrobat, make sure you have the latest version and remove any old versions. Earlier version had security problems. New one is at:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

but has gotten really ridiculous in size and is adware supported or at least wants to be. I just removed it from my system and am using Foxit.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

If you use Flash (shockwave) then make sure you have the latest version since earlier versions have security problems.

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi

and uninstall any old versions if they don't do it for you.

Ron

If anything in the above is not clear or if one of the links is not working please let me know.
