Your log looks OK.

Do the symptoms in this link look familiar?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165?
we are getting a lot of complaints about this upgrade.  Following may fix it.
a new patch came out April 25 which claims to fix the problem.
You can remove the patch:  Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove software, Show Update then look for Security Update (kb918165) and uninstall it.

I dont have that update.

the symptoms were nothing like the problems im having either.  Sorry.

when i access a secure site i have no probs but if it is a site that requires a cert the site requests the cert as normal then my cert comes up and i click okay - but instead of another box coming up saying someone trying to access the cert and me clicking ok again, it comes up with an error page saying cannot find server.

on top of this is my aol account, which has apparently restored my old favourites from a partition i deleted ages ago.

Don't know much about AOL except that the few times I worked on it when you installed a new version it always kept the old version and all associated folders.  Could your link that starts AOL be pointing to an older version for some reason?

No not really.
I have 3 partitions on my hard disk (for when i mess one up!lol)
The AOL version i had was on a partition I've since deleted.

The favorites must have been hiding somewhere.  Is there any chance the partition did not get deleted and you chose the wrong one at boot?

Are there other logins on your computer?  Rightclick on Start and select Explore then look at the names under \Documents and Settings?  You should see  Administrator, All Users, Default User and then one other that is your login.

For your other problem.  The secure stuff:

Download the Hoster from:
Unpack to your desktop and run it.  If you have green print at the top then just
press Restore Original Hosts then OK.
IF you have red print then press make Hosts Writeable first.
After you Restore Original Hosts then press Make Hosts Read Only?

Get DelDomain.inf from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf  and then right click on it and
Install.  Nothing obvious will happen.

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security, Default Level for internet.

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Restore Defaults.

Any better?

deldomains cleans out your restricted and trusted zones in IE.  Sites in these zones are treated differently from sites in the Internet zone.

Also in Internet Explorer, Help, About Internet Explorer and look to see what Cypher Strength it says you have.

Do you have the name or address of this cert server that it is trying to access?

Start, Run, cmd, OK to bring up a black cmd window.  Type:

nslookup URLofServer

See if it gets an IP address.

That's probably your problem then.  Either the DNS you use does not know the IP address of the server or the server is down.

If it's the former and you do know the IP address you could add a line in the hosts file right below where it says
127.0.0.1 localhost
A.B.C.D URLofServer
(Leave off anything after the .com)
You can use HJT, Misc Tools, Open Hosts file Manager, Open in Notepad to do that.
