Well, I did the scan in SAFE mode with the same results...Bearshare and Dope wars still present...so here's the HJT log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:02:42 PM, on 25/08/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Unpack to your desktop and run it. If you have green print at the top then just press Restore Original Hosts then OK.
IF you have red print then press make Hosts Writeable first.
Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.
Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix Checked the following:
Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained) and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site. One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

see how we did.

Ron:
I did all you requested to this effect:
I cannot run Hijackthis in normal windows mode. I can run it in Safe mode.
When I rebooted to windows and ran counterspy, two new cookies had been added.
I have a feeling we're on the right track but here's the results of my counterspy run:
Howie
BearShare P2P

OK.
Get regseeker from:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Get the killbox from:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/KillBox.zip
Boot into Safe Mode
Run regseeker and when it comes up select Find in Registry then check the two unchecked boxes under the word Keys
and then put bearshare in the Search For box and hit Search!
When it finishes press Select All at the bottom then right click on one of the found entries and select Delete Selected Items.
Repeat for
dopewars
wiseupdt.exe
trickler_bic_dopewars_3202.exe
gatinst
wise solutions
beermat software
Run Kiilbox.

Ron:
SUCCESS!
Regseeker and killbox managed to reduce one of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER entries but dopewars and bearshare were still there (plus 7 new infected cookies)
Reluctantly, I ran regedit and deleted the HKEY entries and rebooted.
The subsequent Counterspy scan was clean
Thanks so much for your input and your patience!

After a full day of surfing (including some very, dark places on the web) and e-mailing I have run two separate scans with O results.
You guys have been an immense help.
Thanks so much

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx I like to run Spybot S&D.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Also like to run AdAware once in a while.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
