aryeh,

Let's see what we can do...

Go to add/remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

AZSearch

The above can appear anywhere in the entry.

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click " Free Online Scan".
2. Click " Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) " Auto Clean".
3. Click " Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click " Check For Update"

( If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click " Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click " Save".

4. Click " Fix ->"

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u azesearch.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = www.azesearch.com

O2 - BHO: ZToolbar Activator Class - {FFF5092F-7172-4018-827B-FA5868FB0478} - C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda\My Documents\azesearch.dll

O3 - Toolbar: AZESearch toolbar - {A6790AA5-C6C7-4BCF-A46D-0FDAC4EA90EB} - C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda\My Documents\azesearch.dll

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {B06300D0-CCDE-11d2-92D3-0000F87A4A55} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {BF80219A-CCDD-11d2-92D3-0000F87A4A55} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {FC09D8A3-C85A-11d2-92D0-0000F87A4A55} - (no file)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda\My Documents\azesearch.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're ' in use', try deleting them from " Safe Mode".

Post back a new log.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply - Can I clarify the following please:-

1.Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u azesearch.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

All I know is where to find 'Command Prompt' but do not understand what I must do. It shows C:/Documents and Settings/Brenda>- (The dll is in My Documents but will not let me delete it)

2.  Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda\My Documents\azesearch.dll

Do you mean I should do a search and delete any files from there? If so, this only showed the dll was in My Documents and would not let me delete the entries.

Many thanks...aryeh

Hey!

What you want to do is open a command prompt so we can either type in a dos command, or using the mouse, drag-select-copy the dos command text, then right-click on the command prompt and select "paste".

You can open a command prompt by clicking on "Start | "Run...", then entering "cmd" (without the quotes). I don't like to run dos commands like regsvr32 directly from the "Start | Run..." box, since as soon and the command completes, the shell (command prompt) window will close - preventing you from seeing the result.

When you have the prompt open, just enter the command along with it's parameters, in this case /u to unregister azsearch.dll

What that command will do, is basically 'detach' that dll from IE, allowing you to delete it later without getting 'cannot delete, file is in use'.

-

No, just delete the file marked in red, from the path specified in black. If you need to delete the entire folder, it would be listed under:

folders...

and if you need to search for item(s) to delete, it would be listed under:

search for these...

In this case, what you would do is locate this file, using the entire filename given:

C:\Documents and Settings\Brenda\My Documents\azesearch.dll

...then delete it.

-

I hope that helps to understand the format of my posts better.

Mike.

Mike,

Sorry, but I still do not understand exactly how to do the Command Prompt. When the prompt is open, what exactly do I type in and then do I do anything else? Until you mention CP in your last post, I had not heard about it before.

I would add that I deleted azsearch from My Documents using Safe Mode...so is the above still necessary? Would still like an explanation  though in case it's necessary to use in the future (and I like to learn new things.

Below is a new HJT log after I deleted azearch from My Documents and removed the items you suggested in your last post. Please tell me if it's clean now.

Many thanks...aryeh

aryeh,

Your log looks fine - good work!

-

Once the command prompt is open, you would just enter the text in it, one line at a time, just like you see it in the post.

If everything is running ok, let's do some cleanup...

1.  Run " Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2.  If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV, run it again - but don't scan, just click " Clear Log" and exit the program.

3.  Go to www.trendmicro.com and click " Free Online Scan", then " Scan now, it's free!". When it's downloaded, select all available drives, then check(tick) " Auto clean", then click " Scan".

4.  Run AdAware SE Personal and " perform a full system scan", then Spybot S&D, and " Check for Problems". Let them both remove the residual 'problems' left that HiJackThis couldn't fix.

5.  Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.

If your having any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

Mike.

Hi
Excuse me Mike for butting in. I just noticed that your HJT program has to be moved to it's own folder on your C:\ drive.

Hi Steve,

My HJT program is in the C drive in it's own folder...unless it's in the wrong position.  Maybe you can explain exactly where it should be and I can check it out.

Thanks...aryeh

Hi Mike,

When you have the prompt open, just enter the command along with it's parameters, in this case /u to unregister azsearch.dll....so I just type in all the words u to unregister azsearch.dll. Is it necessary to do this now the dll has gone?

Is it O.K to delete the HJT backup?

Thanks...aryeh

Hey aryeh!

Is it necessary to do this now the dll has gone?

You know, that's a good question ... :smileyhappy: - Many responders don't bother, however I (my software actually), put's it in by convention.

so I just type in all the words u to unregister azsearch.dll

Now, that doesn't exactly resemble the instructions in original post does it? If, you feel any part of the solution is arbitrary, by all means omit it - my software won't mind ... :smileyvery-happy:

aryeh,

That's ok. I know my instructions are unconventional at times, but i'm trying to include as much as possible to help users get their systems clean. There's even more things i'll need to add as I have more time.

You know, now that you've mentioned it, i've never seen any responder have the user clear out their hjt backups, but this would be my advice... After each thread is resolved, remove all the backups, as that would prevent confusion on the user's part if they ever have to restore the any back in a future fix.

Mike,

regsvr32 /u azesearch.dll

I had to do a lot of work and still have to do the clean ups you suggested...so I'm not surprised I got something wrong::smileysurprised:...aryeh

Hi Mike,

All scans were clean...so once again thank you for your help.

Perhaps you can recommend an easy to understand tutorial about the 'command prompt'

  • "Just use the keyboard."
