Home Page Settings

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.  Please download CoolWebSearch Shredder from: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip.

Reboot into safe mode as per the following instructions:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam.

Run the CollWebShredder and click on fix.

While in safe mode and with all windows closed run HijackThis and delete the following (If not already gone):

Here's the new log for further review. The clarification on the file/directory not to delete I couldn't find on the log so I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Actually only found 2 listed to delete if they weren't already gone so I deleted them. Hope this makes sense.

When you posted this revised log - Did you create it from withing safe mode?  The reason I ask that is that there should be no reason for so many programs to not be running except safe mode.  Please boot into normal mode and create/poste the log from there so that we can verify.

Here's a new log ran after a reboot in normal mode. I found and deleted 14 files/directories that were still listed in original log.  And again--thank you. 

AAGH! I just realized that I did include the 04-HKCU\..\RUN: [ctfmon.exe] C:WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe that you specifically said was a legitimate file. What now? Man, hope I didn't screw things up too badly by doing this. Please advise.

You need to fix this line in hijackthis - baddie.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updater] C:\Program Files\Common files\updater\wupdater.exe

for ctfmon.exe, if you deleted the file - I have put a copy here http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/ctfmon.exe
Right click the link and save in the c:\windows\system32\ folder.

If you just removed the line from hijackthis, try to use the restore function in hijackthis for that line
hijackthis - config - backups.

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log after a reboot

It's back!! I rebooted after completing the fix 1 line and restore 1 line and my start page shows that funky address again. Also, my most recent log doesn't look the same. When I tried to paste the address that shows up--I receive message stating the attributes aren't allowed. Where do I go from here?

Please download the following first - spywareguard (from links on my site - link below), save to a folder, install AFTER the hijackthis fix below - BEFORE you reboot.

Special notes for spywareguard. It will stop the home and search pages from being changed without your saying yes or no, you will need to read any messages in future carefully - it will tell you what the old address was and what the change is being made too. You can than accept or decline.
This would also be the case if you yourself were to change the home page yourself - spywareguard will not be able to tell the difference between you changing and a bad program.

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot s&d, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.
