How do I scan for spyware?

I am pretty sure I have spyware or virus problem.  My system is running real slow, I cannot, access the internet, or my home network.  I really have no idea how to scan without using a program.

go to start----> run------> type 'msconfig' , without quotes. go to start up tab, list all your start up items (case sensitive) and then you have to go online and check your start up items using this tool : http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html
