I am not able to choose a background for my desktop. All my options are greyed out and I am only able to choose a color for my background.

Edited to correct forum software format problems that STILL exist.

Right-click anywhere in a blank area of the Desktop and select "Properties". Select the "Desktop" tab, then click the Customize Desktop button at the bottom. Click the "Web" tab and clear any check marks you find there. OK it, Apply it, and close the window. Reboot.

Please download VirtumundoBeGone.exe:
1. Save the file to your Desktop.
2. Close ALL running programs including your Internet Browser.
3. Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe to launch.
4. Read the introductory information, and then click " Continue".
5. Click " Start".
6. When asked if you want to continue, click " Yes" to run the fix. Do not worry if you see a BLUE SCREEN "Fatal Error" Message, it is normal and expected.
7. When finished it will create a log named VBG.TXT on your desktop.
8. Reboot your PC and post a fresh HJT log along with VBG.TXT. Also, check to make sure you can now change your desktop settings and post back those results as well. Thanks!

Note: This tools does not remove the WinFixer application. WinFixer alone does not cause popups or disrupt the system. If WinFixer was installed on your system because Adware or a Trojan Downloader installed it without your permission, please remove it using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel Applet.

Since we're still waiting for your response, there are a few other things that you should do before you post back.

Your Java application is out of date and causes a slight security risk as a result.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components

1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser.

2. Click Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.
For those just reading this thread:
Depending on your OS, you may have to click Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.

3. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name (to highlight it) then click the "Remove" or "Change/Remove" button.
Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list.
Repeat step 3 as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
**If you are asked to reboot at any point during the uninstallations, please do so. Then go back to Add/Remove and continue with the rest of the removals...when finished uninstalling all of them, reboot the computer.

4. Navigate to and delete:
  • C:\Program Files\ Java =this folder if found
5. Then go to this page.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."and click the "Download" button to the right.

6. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement" the page will refresh and click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language. Save it to your desktop.
Then from your desktop double-click on the executable to install the newest version.

Your Adware infection of virtumonde is likely not to have been properly removed using just the Vitumundobegone tool (although I'm still anxious to see that log) since it hasn't been updated in quite a while...although this infection is a variant of the same one introduced in May of 2002, it has undergone some revision.

The Removal Tool from Symantec has been updated as of February 13, 2007 to include this latest variant which includes an "O4" startup entry, peculiar for a vundo infection. Download and run the tool. Then:

Please run HijackThis again and check the following that may still be present:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: DosSpecFolder Object - {FDA4DFFB-2C3D-4730-8D7E-28523C7F2F67} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqn.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: C:\WINDOWS\SysUpd.exe
O16 - DPF: {DCF0768D-BA7A-101A-B57A-0000C0C3ED5F} - http://203.199.200.61/ads/shareit/da/cab/SysUpd.CAB

Close all windows now except for the HijackThis application window...then click the Fix Checked button.

Locate and delete the following file indicated in Bold text if still present:
C:\WINDOWS\ SysUpd.exe

Reboot the computer.

Perform an onlinescan here.

- Once you are at the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click "send"
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location (Your Desktop is fine).

Post back that log along with the VBG.TXT (on your Desktop) from the previous posted instruction, and a fresh HijackThis log.
Please advise how the computer is running for you now. Thanks!
