Go to here

http://dsvs.org/5/HijackThis.exe and download Hijackthis

Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here.

and someone will help you

Please do not be tempted to "fix" on your own. Hijackthis is a very powerful tool, if used incorrectly can cause system problems

Thanks. I already have HijackThis on the PC, however I can't get to it to be able to use it, because the desktop doesn't show and I can't open anything from what is left of the Start Menu (it keeps crashing after a few seconds of being open)

No. It starts to do it, then everything goes blank after a few minutes.

I'm using a different machine as the other is almost completely unusable at the moment.

Are you able to get a c:> prompt?

If you are, then at c: type in CHKDSK (space) /f

this will check errors and fix them, maybe then we can get the pc to operate well enough to run hijackthis.

Note: in order for chkdsk to run you will have to turn off any running virus protection programs you have running (ie. norton Mcafee etc) To turn them off locate the icon in the lower left corner of tool bar rtclick and close.

If you are able to get running enough please reply.

If you cannot get c:> prompt then we may have to reload windows from your operating systems disc that came with your pc. There is a chance that you will lose some files but it is better that having to reformat and lose everything.

To expedite and make sure that the "operating system" disc is allowed to run properly, do the following

at power up tap the F1 key it will bring you to a set up menu

scroll through the pages (I think it's page 1 or 2) and you will find boot devices list, follow the page instructions and make sure the only one that is highlighted is D: (or E:) depending upon your machine.

This step needs to be followed in case your system has a later service pack installed than the disc provided with your machine

Place the operating system disc in the drive and then restart.

Reinstall operating system.

If successful remember to go back to F1 and change your boot settings back

Once you are able to do this then follow previous posts

I've tried to give careful steps in the hopes of recovering what you have on your machine
