I really hate computers!!

I am trying to help my father fix his comp., it would not let him connect to the internet,
so I contacted our ISP and they thought this was a problem with the Norton and told
me to uninstall it and see if that helped. It did not, so when I tried to reinstall, I got a message
that the DVD/CD drive was missing or corrupted , Dell did a scan and told me all is working fine
but the comp. still will not acknowlege the dvd drive. I tried several times to run a scan directly
from symantec site as well as others, I can not download or print anything from the internet.
I have contacted Geeksquad and paid them for their services, they can not help me either until
the comp. will download or the dvd drive is up and running. Now I am sure that the comp. has
a virus, I just don't know what to do next. This comp. is rarely used and is only 1 yr old., can
anyone tell me what to do? He doesn't mind if everything is erased and reinstalled, I just
don't know how to do that.

I had a similar thing happen a while back with my CDROM drive.  Luckily my computer has 2 CD drives.

Will it recognize other CDs/DVDs?

I wish I had a plan of action for you but one day it just started working again with no explaination... its still a mystery and has worked fine ever since.

Since you are paying for GeekSquad's services why are they not assisting?

Can you run Ad-Aware to look for spyware? Sometimes that will keep you from being able to download files from the internet...

Jaye,

A word to the wise, Don`t follow e-mail addresses from potential solicitors, post problems on the public board so everyone can look at it. Don`t give out e-mail or private information. Hopefully Dell is looking into this.

Claire,

Sry, I have been working overtime and just got to this.    It won't recognize any CD or DVD's. The only thing that I can run is spy-sweeper, but that was already installed and is picking up nothing. Do you think that I should uninstall?    Thanks for your advice!!  :smileyhappy:
