I think I've got a virus

My computer has been acting up lately and I have all kinds of pop-ups telling me I have a virus.  How exactly would I go about trying to remove this virus?  It is one that won't let me turn my computer off at the start button, and my internet has ALL KINDS of pop-up stuff...and a lot of system error thing as well.  PLEASE HELP ME.. I have a brand new computer.  Thank you.

Lots of the regular posting anti-malware experts on this board have moved to pastures new for various reasons. You may find it better to find another support site to assist you.

Please go to this link and choose one of the websites on the left of the page.
Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals
As you can see they all work together in cleaning malware (Virus, Spyware and adware).

To help you choose from that list

TomCoyotes contains the anti-malware school - Classroom.
SpyWareInfo contains the anti-malware school - BootCamp.
Net-Intergration is the support site of Spybot S&D.
Lavasoft Support is the support site of Ad-aware.
Wilders Security has since stopped hijackthis log support due to the lack of experianced helpers.
Others that I would recommend Zerosrealm, Subratam.org, SpyWare BeWare and ComputerCops, but generally all those on that list will have experts to help you.
Texruss and myself are Teachers at The TomCoyote Forum.

There are still some knowledgable people left posting here at Dell, so you may still get help from them.

I wish you all the best at getting your computer clean.

Pop ups are not usually due to viruses but spyware.

How does you computer get infected with spyware?

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?DN=1077228

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?c=us&cs=19&DN=1089806&l=en&s=dhs

Spyware usually gets installed when someone using your computer goes to unsafe sites like porn sites or shopping sites(fake sites not the well known sites )

Depending on the extent of infection in your computer you would need to do the following steps

1) scan your computer online to see if you have spyware

http://www.pestscan.com/

2) Run the free programs which are the best of the best do not buy any programs

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

3)If you are still getting popups and errors and would not like to reinstall your operating system (windows) you could try

http://www.a-sap.org/ which Chrisrlg posted (though you may have to

wait for a while to get help with the hijackthis logs on those sites

.) read the link below before posting there

"Yes it is getting typical of all the anti-malware support forums. We currently have a week or more of delay in helping people. Not because we wish too, just the volume of people posting with problems'

"Posting when you cant help and sending people to other sites where

they get NO help at all is wrong!!'
