Major problem first: You have a CoolWebsearch infection (and a dozen other baddies). But we can help.

Get CW Shredder to repair your CoolWebSearch infestations:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip version 1.57.0

Follow the directions for running the program at the next link.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=47

At bleepingcomputer.com start reading at the section that says:

You can download this program here: CWShredder

(Note...we have noticed recently some CWS variants are harder to remove unless the shredder is run in Safe Mode...hit F8 while booting to enter Safe Mode and run the shredder.)

After cleaning with the shredder in Safe Mode do this:

Download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware). Use Spybot first. (1.3 version)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Follow the directions completely at:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Reboot if asked by either program and let it complete any cleanup. Then reboot a final time after running both and run Windows Disk Cleanup: Start/Run/ type: cleanmgr

I check all the categories to be deleted here.

Then reboot and make a new C:\HJT folder. Your present folder is a bad place to run Hijackthis as backup logs will be in a precarious location for safety. Follow my directions here for relocating your Hijackthis file:

http://russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/createhjtfolder.htm

Post back with a new log as a reply to this message (stay in this message posting thread for continuity). Most of your infections will be addressed with these tools, but you must follow the directions exactly to make final manual cleanup easier.

And when you get cleaned, update your anti-virus program and turn on it's features, especially e-mail and on-line protection. Then update the dat files weekly. Down load at least Ad-ware 6 from lavasoft.com and UPDATE it before using. You have a real mess and if you do not use the AV , and the recommend procedures you will be back nexrt week!

Thanks Jake for your suggestion. The problem is that my Norton AV was somehow disabled too and I couldn't run it.

I've downloaded CWshredder but for some reason couldn't find it anywhere in my C drive. I have now downloaded it on a floppy and hope I could run it from there. Let me give this a try.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy (including the zip copy) so it can't be used.

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware, UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, please check for removal.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FMSZDJ] C:\WINDOWS\FMSZDJ.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FMSZF] C:\WINDOWS\FMSZF.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FPZHUCMW] C:\WINDOWS\FPZHUCMW.exe

Then Reboot to safe mode (F8 on boot) and delete the following files/folders:-

Folder > C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH\ (or similar starting with MYWEBS...)
Folder > C:\Program Files\webHancer\
File > > C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe
File > > C:\WINDOWS\System32\msawindows.exe
and the following if checked above:-
File > > C:\WINDOWS\FMSZDJ.exe
File > > C:\WINDOWS\FMSZF.exe
File > > C:\WINDOWS\FPZHUCMW.exe

Then Reboot and post a fresh log for me to check.

Chris, thanks very much for your assistance. My computer seems to be running much better now. My Norton Internet Security and Antivirus programs are now reactivated and appear to run properly. One problem that remains is that I still cannot open my emails with Outlook express. The headings are there but it's just blank in the message body. Any suggestions you could provide on this issue ?

The new HJT log is pasted below and thanks again for your help. Thanks to you too Texruss!

Glad Chris fixed you up...he's my UK big brother. >;->

Try this for OE blank messages:

Go to the  Start\Run box and type:  regsvr32   inetcomm.dll

Texruss, thank you. I'm at work now, so will try your suggestion when I get home.

I have one more problem and hope it's not too much of a burden on you. Although my Norton Internet security and Antivirus 2004 have been reactivated I could not get updates from Liveupdates. I got the messages saying that I check to verify that the computer is connected to the internet, even though I was connected.

I tried to access Symantec.com directly but was refused. I also got similar messages when trying to access the websites of some other Antivirus providers (McAfee...).  I checked the different settings of the internet browsers (Netscape and IE) as well as those of the Norton softwares but couldn't tell what was wrong.

Thanks and I would like to say that I admire the jobs you and your fellow experts are doing. It's good to know we do have good guys on our side.

The Liveupdate problem is another issue, but looking at your last HJT log you still have multiple issues:

Number one...relocate your hijackthis file to a new folder you creat at C:\HJT:

http://russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/createhjtfolder.htm

Next, after doing that and running hijackthis from the new C:\HJT folder:

Scan and put a check to the left of each of these entries:

O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe

With no other windows open click on Fix checked button.

Reboot to SAFE mode
How to start the computer in Safe mode

Show hidden files.

Show hidden files and folders

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:

Drill on down into the paths for these items and delete the following files and/or folders:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch   folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mskpkc.dll      file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msnkmi.dll      file

C:\WINDOWS\
sysupd.exe    file

Reboot in normal mode and run Disk Cleaner: (type cleanmgr at Start/Run button). Scan the hard drives and delete all files in all categories at the end.

Browse a bit and then run hijackthis again and paste a new log here.

After the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP . That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.

HTH (Hope that Helps)

OK. I have done what you suggested and the new HJT log is pasted below. A couple of problems though...

I have tried to create the HJT folder directly in the C drive as instructed but the hijackthis file still showed up as being in a temporary directory. So what did I do wrong ? Second, the files you asked me to delete could not be found anywhere in the computer. I ran a search for hidden files and folders but they are nowhere to be found even though they showed in the earlier scan. Where else could they be ?

On the positive side, I followed your ealier advive and I can open my emails with Outlook Express again.

As usual, I really appreciate your help !

You probably copied the hijackthis.zip to c:\hjt instead of the CONTENTS of the zip. Any item inside a zip is always copied by windows to a temp location to run and deleted after it closes - hence the lost backups. Ensure that you are not trying to run from inside a zip copy.

Hi Chris, thanks for the tip. I finally was able to create the HJT folder directly in the C drive for the hijackthis files. I have run Spybot and Adaware again and posted below is the new HJT log. Appreciate if you could take a look at it and let me know if it's clean.

Excellent! You worked hard and the results paid off. Nice job. One small empty dead link:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Fix that in Hijackthis and you should have a clean machine. Keep an eye out for recurring Clientman fragments as it is a tough nut to crack. If it re-occurs we can offer suggestions to deal with it.

Now to stay clean from future re-infections:

1. The main cleanup programs:

Spybot Search&dDestroy, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.

Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.

Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...go slow on the directions for the custom setup of Adaware:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

I also like to run Windows Disk Cleanup after cleaning with those two tools. Make sure you reboot if any reboot cleanup functions of Spybot and Adaware are advised by these tools (this may happen at the end of their cleanup).

Reboot and click on Start/Run/ type: cleanmgr
I check all the selected items to be deleted here.

2. Proactive programs: Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad MSIE ActiveX scripts from installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known baddies.

3. IE-Spyad, puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentally getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

Links for these at: http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/compsafetyonline.html

4. Don't forget keeping Windows updated. The automatic updates frequently fail so run it manually once a week or when new updates are publicized.

Free Windows Security CD (for those who qualify):

5. Keep your antivirus updated.

6. Practice safe computer habits. Don't click on strange email attachments thinking your AV will defend you. Usually it will. Sometimes it won't when a new virus hits the Net and definitions take hours to create by the AV vendors. There is only one defense that works 100% for the safe protection of your machine's personal data and that is timely and accurate backups of your files. Hard drives die, viruses ruin your files, and other bad things can happen (fire, theft, etc..). Offsite backups are the best.

7. Don't forget our great analysis tool Hijackthis. We have a lot of gratitude we need to show towards the author Merijn. I hope he does great things in his future endeavors and is richly rewarded for his time and expertise in providing this super program.

Hijackthis (to analyse your system and submit a log file to expert forums):

(for Hijackthis logs...please copy to and run Hijackthis.exe into a new folder you create in the root level of the C: drive. Name this folder HJT for best and safest results). (don't put in a temp folder, or the Windows desktop, etc...as it needs a safe folder to keep backup logs). Also when people post here and place it on the Desktop the log usually shows their full name since their Windows user profile is commonly named with their full name. We try not to disturb your privacy. *;-)
