Did you completely remove NAV?  Sometimes using the Add/Remove programs option doesn't get the entire program off.  See this article on the Symantec web site for how to manually remove NAV and other Symantec products if the Add/Remove fails:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=bar_sch_nam&docid=2004020909040706&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

That what might be conflicting with the installation of a new antivirus software.

I do not like either one of those anti virus software programs.  Both were buggy and hard to remove.  I got PC-Cillin, which has been rated above both Nortons and Mcaffe, and not to mention that its easier to uninstall.  Up to you, but you will learn at some point that even McAffe is buggy.  PC-Cillin cost me $49.00 for the entire internet security package, but you can get it for even less.  Or you can use Zone Alarm free version for the firewall and AVG free version for the anti virus.  Both are really good.

Since SymNRT didn't solve your problem as far as Norton was concerned.... is it possible that the McAfee (or your 'older' PC-Cillan) didn't completely uninstall??   do the error messages you're getting give you any more information??

there's a free tool available from MajorGeeks, called AV Uninstaller 1.0, that advertises the ability to
"automatically uninstall:

Dr Solomon AntiVirus Toolkit,
McAfee VirusScan,
Norton AntiVirus,
F-Prot Pro and F-Secure AV Products

without the user having to know which one they have installed".

The tool is produced by the F-Secure Corporation, and is supposed to run under all versions of Windows.

Be advised that I have never used this particular tool, and as such, cannot vouch for its effectiveness, nor for its safety.
If you choose to download and run it, you are proceeding at your own risk.

(Perhaps someone else who has used it, either successfully or unsuccessfully, can chime-in here with their experience???)

The tool can be downloaded from:

You also might want to go to the locked post at the top of the board, then look under the General Questions section and click on the link for "I think my system is infected . . ." and scan your computer for possible viruses and spyware/adware.  I'm not saying it's the cause of your problems, but you want to rule out all possibilities.  There just may be something lurking there that's interferring with your installation.
