java activeX
using winpatrol 2008 in the active x tab i found i had a number of activeX from previous java builds enabled. from 1.6.0_01 through to 1.6.0_05, despite having removed previous java runtimes and having the latest java installed. i've disabled them. would they have been able to be used without the corresponding java being installed

melboy:
using windows explorer, check to see if these older java still exist:
the files should be under c:\windows\program files\java
this "overall" java folder should contain only the current java folder jre1.6.0_06
the java UNinstaller sometimes leaves over old folders.
you can safely delete folders with earlier names, such as jre1.6.0_05
another place to look is under c:\windows\downloaded program files
you should find at least one (perhaps more -- I have 3) entries named Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0
go to the rightmost column, the current version should be 6,0,60,2

using WinPatrol, from its activeX tab,
click on [highlight] one of the older java entries, then click on INFO.
it will tell you the location of the ssv.dll file.
presumably, it will point to a folder that's no longer present [in which case, you're completely safe], or better yet, it may even indicate that the file is not found.

ky331:
thanks, in the overall java folder along with 1.6.0_06 was 1.6.0_05, which was duly sent to the recycle bin
in downloaded program files there are three entries 6,0,60,2.
i rebooted ,but the activeX still show in winpatrol. i have disabled them though.
one 1.6.0_01
three 1.6.0_02
three 1.6.0_03
three 1.6.0_05
all of them ssv.dll.

many thanks ky331
they all seem to be here:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\JAVA\JRE1.6.0_06\BIN\SSV.DLL
including the current 1.6.0_06

interesting.... allegedly older versions, but all pointing to the current file.
bottom line seems to be that you're safe.
however, since this is a newly added feature to winpatrol, i'd suggest you report your anomalous findings at their user forum:

I would not disable any of those activeX entries. They do not represent older versions that place you at any risk.
I have the latest java version only, and I'm seeing pretty much the same here in WinPatrol:
- Java Plug-in 1.6.0_06
- Java Plug-in 1.6.0
- Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02
- Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02
- Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03
(Despite the apparent duplication of the _02 entry, they have different CLSIDs).
Note that all are Java 1.6.0 versions. When Java updates from, say 1.6.0_02 to 1.6.0_03, this is a minor change, and would not likely change the version number of many of the files contained in the program.
When you examine the version of the files in C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06, you will note that most are a lower version number of the 1.6.0 family.

thanks joe...but... i am finding it hard to find any other file version number other than 1.6.0_06 or
6,0,60,2.
it does make you wonder why you could possibly need all those activeX controls?
eleven in total! for the ssv.dll.
oops, sorry ky331, slow typer!
ive checked using the link and i have verified i have the latest version installed. when i installed it i first downloaded the new for offline installation, removed the old via add/remove programs, re booted and then installed the new, ccleaning in between.
i've been into all the sub sections in manage add-ons in IE7 and can only find add-ons that are 1.6.0_06
even in add-ons that have been used by internet explorer.

Joe & Melboy,
I was also wondering the same thing... it's one thing to disable [or better yet, remove] actual old versions of java... but if these are instead merely "mis-labeled" versions, which in fact all point to the current version, then disabling it might in fact disable the current java.
melboy, I suggest you try testing your java here and see what the results are:
