Java JRE 6 update 3, now available

for windows Vista/XP/2000/2003

click on the appropriate link

I prefer the larger (" offline" ) windows version, saving the installation file to disk....

Note: for windows 98/ME, the last release was version 5.0 update 13: http://java.com/en/download/windows98me_manual.jsp

Thanks, ky331. :)
For anyone needing more detailed steps:
After downloading the offline installation for Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 be sure to remove all other versions of Java before installing the updated version.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop (or wherever you saved the setup to) double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

  • Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.

Yesterday for the first time ever the updater within the Java applet in Control Panel finally worked. This despite the fact that jusched.exe is not listed as a running process. I just clicked on the Update tab> Update Now button. This installed JRE 6u3 quickly and easily, without having to visit the download site. I'm not particularly recommending this method, but it did work for me.

Unfortunately, it still didn't uninstall my previous version of JRE, which I still had to do manually as described above.

In any event, it's not a bad idea to verify your installation afterwards here:
