actually yes, I did have it installed, right up until before I actually posted here today, I uninstalled sun java thinking that might be the problem (I don't even really understand what Java is or does either) anyway, it didn't matter, it did it when I had it installed and I am having the same problem without it.
Did the problem begin when you switched from McAfee to Norton Anti-Virus? Do you have any other security software installed?
Norton Anti-Virus will not block Javascript, but other anti-spyware/malware products may.
In case the problem is that your browser has been hijacked, you may want to follow some of the suggested steps
here to detect and remove spyware and malware. Note especially the steps beginning with (2).
Thanks Jim. I did try what you said to do but it still would not let me open anything. I also did not realize those two javas were different. What it was that I had and then uninstalled was Sun Java. It is also weird to me that I cannot even open a message board on mtv.com when I used to have no problem. I wonder if it is because of my Norton ANTIVIRUS program? I used to have Mcafee and I was able to open those forums without a problem. This is all just really strange.
Hi Jim. The problem did start around the time I switched programs it has been a few months actually. My Mcafee subscription that came with my puter was due to run out so I purchased Norton and use that now. I do also have spywareguard, Adaware, Spybot and Spywareblaster. I don't really think my browser has been hijacked. The problem I have been having only involves those two particular websites. Every other website I frequent, I seem to have no problem opening a link. Just the mtv.com and now CSN network which is actually a christian website that has services you can listen to online via windows media player and the funny thing is, a couple weeks ago I had no problem clicking on the webcast and getting it to open the window but for some reason they changed their web page a bit and now the link is a bit different and as I said everytime I click on it I get that "Javascript" in my tool bar which is the same as with trying to link to mtv's message boards. Hope my info helps and thanks again for all of yours.
Is this the CSN link you're using? http://www.csnradio.com/ If so, they're reporting "repairs and upgrades" as of now. So the problem may be theirs. What MTV link is causing problems?
You might want to download and try
Mozilla Firefox, and see if you encounter the same problems.
Given how many Web sites use Javascript, I does sound like it might be a site problem...but two of them?
(edit) Here's a
Javascript test site I found. If the various tests there work on your browser, then the problem may indeed be with the two sites you're having problems with.
Ooops Jim, I take back what I said about the mtv board link. The error I get when trying to click on one of the community message boards is (well it isn't really an error as I said) it is at the bottom of the browser window but it doesn't say javascript it says this:http://www.mtv.com/community/message_boards/boardsdir.jhtml#
and the board doesn't open up. Could it be something to do with pop up blocker? I tried to disable that in the security settings but it still did not fix the problem. It is just really strange that on every other site so far except for these two, I have no problem linking. But it must have something to do with my security settings somehow? I just have no clue as to what to change.
Hi again Jim :) Yes, that is the correct website and I know where you are talking about where it says repairs in progress but that only applies to the forums. If you click at the top where it says webcast, that takes you to the two links..one for dial up or one for broadband. I click on the dial up since that is what I have and that is the link that will not open for me. Now as far as the mtv.com link. After going to the website, I click , I think it is the "Community" link at the top and that takes you to the message boards for the different shows..ie: Osbornes, Real World, etc..etc..If I click on any of those links for the shows, nothing happens and I get that Javascript on the IE toolbar on the bottom of the web page. I really do appreciate you trying to help me figure out my problem here. :)
Hey Jim, I haven't done the javascript tests. Sorry if you posted a link for that. I will go back and check. I do not know which pop up blocker I have but I am assuming it is whatever came with this system. I do not have google I don't think. I apologize, I really do not know much about the technical details of the puter or some of the software. Like Javascript, I don't even know what that is but I did look it up and I guess it is computer language or something?? Anyway, I will go see about doing those tests but remember I said that I had uninstalled Sun Java? Do you think I should find and download that again? Thanks so much and reply only when you have time.
When I click on the "Webcast" link, and hover the cursor over "32-bit webcast", I see "javascript : openWebcast32()" in the lower left. Clicking on the link brings up a Windows Media player window...and the webcast begins playing.
I have the Google popup blocker installed in IE 6.0. Is that what you're using?
Did you try the javascript tests? Were there any problems?
Here's the link to the
Javascript test site I found. Viewing the results on that page will tell us whether there's a general problem with Javascript, or whether something else is interfering with those two Web sites. Since the tests are for Javascript, whether Java is installed or not won't affect the results.
Which popup blocker is installed depends on when your system was shipped from Dell. Microsoft began including a "pop-up" blocker for Internet Explorer with XP Service Pack 2. It's described
here.
Java is an entirely different "language" than Javascript (that's a confusing pair of names!). As you found out, both of them are "programming languages". Since the "native" language of all computers is incredibly primitive, programming languages have been developed to make it easier for people to develop software for computers in more expressive languages than the "native" ones that the computer uses.
You should be able to reinstall Sun Java without any impact on the problem you're having. The current Java release can be downloaded through
this link.
Thank you once again Jim for offering your help, you have been so kind. I was just thinking I wasn't even sure if this post should be on the virus forum so I apologize if it is misplaced. I am going to go to the link and check Java. Thanks for posting it :) I will let you know how it all pans out.
1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
Wow Chik. Thanks! This is definitely my problem and I really appreciate your info. I did the steps and unfortunately it still did not fix it, so it looks like I need to reinstall my OS. This truly ticks me off because it is obviously something that is within the sysytem that came with this puter. I hate having to do this stuff because I am not all that knowledgeable and I am afraid I will screw up a setting somewhere along the line. Oh well such is life with puters. Thanks again!

Even though Java and Javascript have similar names, they're entirely different. This link shows how to enable Javascript for many browsers.
