LU1814 error with Norton Live Update

I get an LU1814 error when using Live Update with Norton Internet Security on my Dimension 8400. It won't connect to the Internet and download updates.

I've tried everything Symantec recommends -- disabling firewall, verified Internet settings in IE and Live Update, deleting Live Update files, I even uninstalled both Norton apps and reinstalled.

I know it's not the firewall in my wifi router, because Live Update works fine on my son's computer.

Any suggestions on what I can try next?

Do you have any problem getting to Symantec.com with your browser?  Some spyware will do things to keep you from getting there.  But if you can get there see if you can manually download the latest updates.

sometimes that will help and if not at least you have current files.

Also look in your event logs and see if there are any hints there:

Check the Event logs for errors:
Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK then select Application.  Look for red marked files that have a time stamp about the time of the attempt to use live update.  Open the event then click on the bottom of the three buttons to copy the text.  Move to a reply and Edit, Paste.  Repeat for any other different errors that happened during the same period or since the last reboot.  Please don't go back to the beginning of time and no events from a Safe Mode boot.  Repeat for System.  If your PC speaks something other than English don't translate it unless it doesn't use the Latin alphabet and then please include the timestamps.

Have you paid for Symantec or is this a trial that came with the PC?  If it's a trial then uninstall it and try Avast! It's free and puts a lot less of a load on your PC.  See:

Removing Norton/Symantec is job in itself.  Once you uninstall it, it still leaves a bunch of folders lying around that Avast will choke on.  You need to Start, Search, For Files or Folders, then open More Advanced Options and check the top three options then search for symantec and delete everything it finds (unless you have something else from them like Ghost or PCAnywhere then you have to be a bit more careful and just delete the stuff in the subfolders that belongs to the antivirus. )  Repeat for norton.

Ron: Thanks -- I downloaded the latest definitions, no problem.

I have no idea what any of this means.

This is amazingly frustrating. LiveUpdate was working fine one day, then wouldn't work the next. It started last year. A Symatec techie helped me solve the problem, but I can't recall what we did. Then it quit connecting again, but I let it go because the virus definition subscription was about to expire. I bought Internet Security 2007 and thought a fresh install might work. But no luck.

Thanks for any help you can share.

Look at the clock in the bottom right.  Does it say the correct time?  Move the cursor over it.  Are the month day and year correct?
