Malware and virus problems...

I was recently infected with a serious malware/virus.  The symptoms are popups warning me of attempted hijacls of my computer, popups asking me to go to a anti-spyware site, and even my desktop being hijacked by placing links to a site that advertises antispyware and antimalware programs.  It also overides my desktop background and places some kind of hyperlink that causes my IE browser to open up and go to the same sites.  I've used Trend Microsoft, Malwarebites, Spyware terminator, ATF Cleaner, and just today, SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition.  Malwarebites usually cleans out everything, but after i turn off the computer and later come back, all of the problems have returned and I run Malwarebites to clean it again. And it is always the same files over and over again. This has happened several times already. I just finished running both Malwarebites and SuperAntispware nearly two hours ago.  I'm kind of at my wits end here.  So i'm posting my HiJack This! log in hopes you can help me.

I also must appologize for the HTML links in the log.  I'm not sure how to remove them.

Thank you so much for helping me.  So far i haven't had any problems.  I've done everything you said to do in the last 5 minutes and so far no popups or anything else.  After i post this log i will run all of my anti-virus, and anti-malware/spyware/adware programs to make sure I'm clean.

Now there is one file that I am worried about:
O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe

It looks like the file is a key logger or something similar.  Maybe i'm wrong.  Could you look this up as well?  Thank you in advance.

I still seem to have one problem that won't go away.  I cannot ask Task Manager any more.  Every time i try to access task manager i get a msg saying, "Task Manager has been disable by your Administrator."  I am the Administrator!  So how do i fix this?

This line:

O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe

Is legit, it part of this program:

C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies

To fix your other problem

1. Go HERE and download FakeAlertFix

Save it to your Desktop. But do not run it yet.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode
This can be done by
  • Restart your PC, and after it starts, but before you see the Windows Splash screen
Begin tapping the F8 key twice a second untill you reach another menu screen (black background with white menu choices)
Use your arrow keys and select Safe Mode and then Enter

3. Close all Internet Explorer Windows and Run FakeAlertFix
  • Double click the fakealertfix.Zip file to unzip it.
    Open the FakeAlertFix Folder
Double Click FakeAlertFix.vbe to run the program
Then Select O.K. at the prompt
Allow the program to run (Your desktop will disappear, then re-appear. This is normal)
When it is finished it wil produce a log C:\FakeAlertFix.txt
Copy and paste the results of that log in your reply

4. Then reboot your PC into Normal Windows Mode->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hiajckthis log.
As well as the C:\FakeAlertfix.txt log

No problem.

You may now remove/delete/uninstall the tools we used to clean your PC

Now that your log is clean

There are some final notes:
Disable and Enable System Restore
  • Lets create a clean System Restore point
    the instructions are here

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of
    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.u5.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the " Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: " Accept License Agreement".
    The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Update your Anti Virus Software

Use and maintain a Firewall

Download and install SiteHound by Firetrust for protection against malicious websites.

Pick the version that matches your browser

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently for critical updates

Backup your Important Documents and Files on a regular basis
  • To a disc or a USB key, not your Hardrive
