McAfee "mcu.tmp" files?

I run the search *.tmp,*.chk,~*.* (touted by several reputable computer sources) to clean out temp files that aren't cleaned by other means...lately have found several file folders named mcu .tmp.....these file folders are numbered, for example, mcu 9.tmp, mcu 44.tmp, etc. ,  and are in the C\Windows\Temp.. I looked up the file properties and they seem to be McAfee Update files and folders (UpdReq.mcaf,UpdResp.mcaf) and they are dated , they date from 6-13 to 7-17-06, I tried to delete a few of the older ones, 2 went to recycle bin, a few say "cannot delete cannot find source or disk", copied all of them first to cd, just in case..
This morning, tried to delete one and it just stayed without the error message.... the whole thing is odd, as an example: mcu98.tmp dated 7-14-06 says (in Properties) folders:vso, contains 4 files, 1 folder 5.55KB it is a "Read Only" attribute... there are currently 14 such folders...
When I had McAfee VirusScan 2005, never saw these types of files when I ran *.tmp,*.chk,~*.*
Why are these files being generated with VirusScan 2006 and should I, and if so, how do I delete them, they take up quite a bit of space...
I have run a VirusScan and Ad-Aware scans, I have no problems...
Anyone else have this?

I had asked McAfee about the mcu.tmp files. They said it's ok to delete them. Each one was created when an automatic update was downloaded. If they won't delete in 'normal' mode, reboot and press F8 before XP starts loading, choose Safe Mode and try deleting them again.

To be honest, I never bothered to delete them.

Ron, thank you so much for replying, the info you gave was comforting and I will do as you suggest.
When I had an online chat with McAfee, the tech sent me an email explaining how to do a scan!
Never once mentioned what I asked about, which was the mcu.tmp files...
thus this posting...

You're welcome. Glad to help. I actually deleted all those mcu folders last night after responding to your post. Poof...all gone, no adverse effects.

And guess what? Another McAfee update today and another mcu___.tmp folder!

Hi Ron, am curious as to where you deleted the mcu.tmp files from, i.e.  Windows Explorer, or do you also use the *.tmp,*.chk,~*.* search, or?

I found these files in Windows Explorer, haven't tried to delete them from there...will wait til you tell me where and how you deleted yours....

Thanks again for the reply!

Don't think it mattes how you delete them. I did Windows file search. (They're all in c:\windows\temp). I selected all of them in the search results pane, right-clicked and selected "Delete".

Just to test things, I used Windows Explorer to navigate to today's (19-Jul) mcuf8.tmp folder in c:\windows\temp. Selected it, right-clicked and Delete. Gone.

If you're still having problems, boot in safe mode and try to delete them from there.

I suppose the difference could be that I installed VirusScan 2006, v10 from CD earlier this year and removed the previous version which was installed by Dell, though I did purchase a new subscription for that old version last year.

Even if you can't/don't delete them, I don't see it as a problem. They contain relatively small files (~1-2KB) so shouldn't take up much HD space.

Ron, hi again, I just, thanks to your encouragement, deleted many of the older mcu.tmp files... (I always leave 2 days of current temp files before deleting)I deleted them from my *.tmp,*.chk,~*.* search results...funny..right clicked, chose delete and it showed the file going to the recycle bin, but did not disappear from the search 'til I did a restart...didn't have to do "the safe mode" thing.

Anyway, the deed is done and I am happy, with 14 file folders, each having several files in them, the space taken was significant to me...

I had McAfee installed on my Dell when I bought it 3 years ago, I have purchased the cd version each year to upgrade, I also remove previous editions before installing new version....

Not to "beat a dead horse" but I asked McAfee, my Smart Computing Q&A board, did a Google, and every other search engine and just could not find a satisfactory answer to this question, til now, can't tell you how much I appreciate the input and resolution...I am on my own learning "all things, computer", so this venue is extremely important and helpful.

Sincerely, Mandalay

Dear Gus82570:
Thank you for the FYI and your experience with McAfee "temp" files.
I am confused, however, about your remark about my follow-up (or lack thereof)
posts...I re-read the whole thread and the only thing I didn't respond to was the emoticon from Ron - I thought we were done!
