MicroTrend HouseCall

I had a problem with my computer (Deminsion 2400) and had it solved by one of Dell's Moderator. He said to use MicroTend HouseCall and I did. It fixed the problem. I did have a virus. He also said to run it at least once a week. So far so good. Now it seems that I can't open it. I get a message that says "unable to run housecall. Because this website is not authourized to hose HouseCall. Does anyone know what that is about? I had saved it to favorites and each time went there to use it. The only thing that has been added is Google Toolbar. What do I try? Dana

I typed in notebook and it opened notebook but there was nothing there. Then I ran a search including hidden files and still nothing listed. Any other advice or directions? Dana

Could be a parasite blocking requests. A quick check of your HOSTS file could indicate malicious activity. If you have XP follow these directions:

Open notepad (Start button/Run  type notepad   press enter )

Browse through My Computer/C: drive/Windows folder (may be WINNT) and drill on down through these Windows subfolders: /System32/Drivers/Etc

In that ETC folder click on the right down arrow in the middle bottom dialog box (Files of Type)  and change Text documents to All Files. HOSTS will appear. Open it and look and see if you see more entries than just this:

127.0.0.1  localhost

If you see a bunch and you didn't run a protective HOSTS program like IE-SPYAD then you're probably infected. If so post back for more directions.

I found 3 files by typing in search/32.

file

SAM file

BHO file

Also I had to reformat windows xp with step by step instructions from Dell. I don't have the McAfee virus scan now. It came installed on my computer when I bought it. Should I still have that and run it? I will wait for your reply before I start the other process that you recommended. Dana

It's there...you can't run IE without one. But try something else:

We need you to download and install an analysis and repair tool called Hijackthis.

Go here and download the file: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt

Please unzip Hijackthis.zip into a new folder you create in the root level of the C: drive. Name this folder C:\HJT for best and safest results. (don't put in a temp folder, or the desktop, etc...as it needs a safe folder to keep backup logs). Also when people post here and place it on the Desktop the log usually shows their full name since their Windows user profile is commonly named with their full name. We try not to disturb your privacy. *;-)

See this link for graphical instruction: http://russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/createhjtfolder.htm

Run Hijackthis, click on the 'scan' button and then 'save log' button. Copy and paste the contents of the text file you save into a reply to this message. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called Copy and Paste at http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt

Stay in this thread for continuity. Reply to this message.

Yes...don't leave home without it. *;-)

Install Mcafee, get newest updates, and run a full system virus scan. Post back.

Not sure about the location of Mcafee on the Dell disks..browse through them and see. I always get Norton. I'll check with my brother as he recently got a Dell with Mcafee. 9OK...just called him and he said he has a 90 day Mcafee trial and it's on the blue Applications CD.

From your Hijackthis log you're infected with an Adware hijacker(MySearchBar) and also the Netster parasite.

Go into Start/Control Panel/add Remove Programs. Look for My Web entry and remove it.

After removing the program reboot.

Next download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware). Use Spybot first. Follow the directions completely at:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Reboot if asked by either program and let it complete any cleanup. Then reboot a final time after running both and run Windows Disk Cleanup: Start/Run/ type: cleanmgr

I select all the junk to be deleted here.

Post back with a new Hijackthis log as a reply to this message (stay in this message posting thread for continuity).

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are:-
------------------------
How on earth did I get infected with all that spyware in the first place? http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=38;t=3051
Also available from here :- http://www.computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html or http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
--------------
Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot s&d, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.
