Please explain what you mean with "they go away"?

What happens when you click on the shortcuts to start them?

Are they listed in your explorer?

What happens if the program is open, does it also go away?

Left click on Start

Choose Explore

Open your Program File folder

See what's in there, do you see all your programs listed there?

When did this start?

When I hit Start | Programs it says (empty)

Zonealarm is the only  program in the taskbar but it can't be brought up.
Shortcuts won't open.
