Multiple virus/spyware problems

Hi, I have spent the weekend working on my sister's computer, with limited success. It has the task manager/registry editor disabled, periodically comes up with no start menu/desktop icons (Explorer.exe in C:\windows\system32), won't start Internet Explorer, tried updating virus software via Firefox and get message that SSL disabled, hostblock virus, Vundo.gl virus, etc. Totally messed up. I have downloaded and run Hijack This. Here is the log Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 3:25:14 PM, on 11/11/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16544) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\MotorolaDAP.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\proper.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\inf\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Boot Optimizer\HPBootOp.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb09.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon05.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\browser\ybrwicon.exe C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\CAVTray.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\CAVRID.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\YOP\yop.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\browser\ycommon.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.2\Apps\apdproxy.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Compaq Connections\5577497\Program\Compaq Connections.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqimzone.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSTE08.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iesearch&locale=EN_US&c=Q405&bd=presario&pf=desktop&parm1=seconduser R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iesearch&locale=EN_US&c=Q405&bd=presario&pf=desktop&parm1=seconduser R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ads.k8l.info/media/servlet/view/dynamic/url/zone?zid=115&pid=60&HLTW=41&TTC=1&GNW=0 R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! What do you know about any processes that create or modify a file NTDLL.DLL? This file pops up on the desktop every time. I have deleted it from there in Safe Mode and it comes right back. When I try to navigate to certain sites (like AT&T to update virus), the address line includes a redir_now reference and then the site name repeated again. Any ideas? Dan

There is definitely something up with this NTDLL.DLL. It exist in C:\windows\system32, dated 8/04 about 692 KB, but there is a small (48 kb) instance on each user profile desktop. I was able to delete it once after killing a process ctfmon.exe, but as soon as I started IE again, it reappeared on the desktop.

NTDLL.DLL. Is a Windows System file. This LINK may help.

I don't see anything elsse in your log malware/spyware related. And DNS and connection issues are not my area of expertise.

Rerun Killbox
  • At the main window Select Tools ->> Delete Temp Files
At the next window uncheck XP Prefetch
    Leave the other boxes checked
Select " Delete Selected Temp Files"
Allow the tool to run. When it is finished (You will know that it is finished because the checks will disappear from the location boxes)
    Select " Exit"
Then Select " Exit" again to close Killbox

2. You may want to run sfc /scannow and see what turns up

Right, the version in C:\windows\system32 is the system file, but the smaller ones that get created on each users desktop seem to be causing the problem. I saw a thread on another forum that identified a process that was spawning this file. I didn't have that particular process running, but think it's something similar. They used an Avenger utility to identify and clean it.

Here is the link to that thread on another forum where someone had a similar copy of NTDLL.DLL on the desktop and the process this person used to clean up the process.

http://www.help2go.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,32/page,viewtopic/t,26088/postdays,0/postorder,asc/start,0/

Let me know what you think.

The post you supplied is inconclusive. The poster never replied. The NTDLL.DLL that appears on the desktop. Is it a file, a folder, a symbol?

And do you have any type of desktop search program like Yahoo or Google?

It is a file. I was just looking back at some of the logs that I have uploaded and many (I forget which utility, but it's basically showing newer files) have an NTDLL.DLL in c:\documnent and settings\userid\ showing as hidden and system. I want to look for those when I get home. The log does not show the files in \userid\desktop as I was expecting. I don't think my sister has any desktop search utilities like you referenced. Do you think they would be problems? or wanting to use them for something? Sorry, I'm at work and the PC is at my house, so I can't do much until this afternoon when I get home.

Yeah, sorry, I got home and it let me delete the NTDLL.DLL on the desktop, but it reappeared. I rebooted and deleted all instances of NTDLL.DLL in c:\documents and settings and they have not reappeared.

I was able to connect to AT&T and download their online protection suite (they have moved to Norton Internet Security) and it has updated and is running a full system scan right now.

Oh, I did run the killbox and sfc /scannow that you suggested. Maybe that helped?

Anyway, for now it seems to be fine. I want to let that scan run and defrag the hard drive (for performance reasons) and then I hope to say it's all fixed.

Thanks again for all of your help. This has really been a bear!

I finished the defrag and the system really is performing great! I took it back to my sisters and she was amazed at the difference.

Hey I am having major performance issues on my daughters computer. No real visible adware, but I think it has some. Can you review this HiJack this log and see what you find?

Thanks,

Dan

Nothing obvious showing up.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced." deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

2. Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.
  • 1. Click on " Kaspersky Online Scanner"
    2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on " Accept". After reading the contents.
    3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
    4. Click on " Next"->>" Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to " extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
    5. Then click on " My Computer". And the scan will start.
    6. When the scan is complete Select "Save error report as"
Then in the file name just type in kaspersky
Under "save as type" select text .txt
    Save it to your Desktop.

Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan

==========

Note: For IE7 uers. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

No Problem. You are using an oler version of Hijackthis. Let's get the newer one

Please follow the instructions below to download, install, create a desktop shortcut and post your hijackthis log.

Go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.

Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on " Edit > Select All" then click on " Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
If you haven't already posted then register & start a new thread in the Malware Removal section
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Not much there, which is good. How much stuff did CCleaner remove?

1. Let's empty the Quarantine folder in Nortons

If you use Norton AntiVirus 2006
  • 1 Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet
Security, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
2 In the left pane, click Reports.
3 Click View Norton Quarantined and Restore.
4 In the left pane, select the type of risk that you want to remove.
5 In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
    6 Click Delete Item.
7 When you see the message "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this
    item from Quarantine," click Yes.
8 Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.

Not sure how much CCleaner removed. Is there a log file to review?

Deleted old Norton quarantine files, and one Download file.
