Right click on the clock and select Task Manager then Processes and click twice on the column with CPU (usage) this should sort the processes by cpu usage. Normally you should see System Idle at the top with 95%+. If not what do you see as the top 3 processes?
Also check that harddrive is not set to PIO mode. Try the workaround in
You can't assume just because it's SP2 that it doesn't have the PIO problem. Best to check to see what you it is set for.
Running out of memory could indicate a problem with your current RAM or it could be caused by a program with a memory leak. Go back to processes and click on the Mem Usage column head until you get them sorted by most mem usage. Note the first three processes and the amount of memory. Then go do something else for 30 minutes or so and check again. Has the order changed? Is one using more memory?

My System Idle varied between 90-98% over the course of 1 minute. My top three processes are
taskmgr.exe
YPager.exe (I'm assuming this has to go with Yahoo Messenger?)
Iexplore.exe
If I were to close my 4 IM programs (even though they are almost constantly turned on), the list would be
taskmgr.exe
iexplore.exe
msmsgs.exe
Also check that harddrive is not set to PIO mode. Try the workaround in

and see if things speed up.
Make sure you have enough memory and check your harddrive to make sure it has enough free space and do a defrag.
Turn off any unneeded services.
Start, Run, cmd, OK to bring up a black cmd screen then type:
net start
Look in the list to verify that
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
is running.
Close the cmd window.
Right click on My Computer and select Manage then Event Viewer and then System and look for red marks. See if they shed any light on the slowdown.
That's about all I can think of right now.

I have XP SP2, so does that mean I don't have this problem?
Look in the list to verify that

One of the redmarks said something about a memory issue, not being enough evailable memory. But that was it.
And I have recently defraged my computer.
Also, I am thinking of upgrading my RAM to 1 GB from 512 MB in order to speed the system up a bit. Will this make any difference in the speed?
I'm only using 10.4 GB of my 55 GB system.
