My Search

I can not search using msn from my address bar any longer.  On HijackThis, an item, search hook... My Search is listed.  It is very irritating and attempts to gather information from each search.  I believe this is from Google.  Is it safe to remove this by using HijackThis?  Will this completely remove the problem of an unwanted search bar?  If not, how is it removed?  This is not removed by Microsoft, Adaware or Spysweeper antispyware.
Thanks.

Be smart,
Don't mess with HJT by yourself.

No one can advise you what to do without seeing a log. My X-ray vision went out last week, sorry.

Steve, the rest of my HijackThis is unchanged from earlier logs.  MyWay Search is clearly a hijacker, although only irritating.  I can not reset the search to Microsoft (default.)  Here is the log. note item R3

Download KillBox, unzip it to your desktop, then run it. Now:

1. select " Action | Delete on reboot".
2. copy/paste the following file name(s), one at a time, in the " Paste Path of File to Delete" field:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

3. click " Kill File".
4. when prompted to " Reboot Now" select " Yes".

Boot into Safe Mode.

Run HJT and tick these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

Reboot and post a new log,

Steve

Steve, thanks for the information.  I suppose that Myway is coming from Dell judging from the items you have selected.  Interestingly, by blocking myway.com in internet options, the problem is held at bay.  You won't get a message back from me for a few days because Monday I am having a rather serious surgical problem to survive first, a replacement of a worn out hip prosthesis that may be bloody and difficult.  I don't know if I will have time today to do the removal.  Thanks again for your prompt attention to the search issue.  Myway is powered by Yahoo and claims to be non invasive but that is not true.

Lawrence,

From what I have read and heard, My Way is very borderline intrusive.

Get rid of it, you won't notice any changes but correcting that error message.

Hello Steve,  Since I am able to prevent myway.com from running just by blocking the site, I might just leave well enough alone.  I am not getting an error message.  This was not the case with mysearch which I have removed.  With 3 different programs guarding my host files and a proxy server, you would think that hijacks would not happen.  I have advised Spy Sweeper about myway.com.  It will be interesting to see if they will do anything.  They have removed seeq.com, another pest, in response to a report from me..  My browsing is very conservative, but even so, I pick this junk up, mostly, I think, from Google searches.
Go for the Gold!

It's no secret amoung the malware community about My Way.

Now if you post one more log or just do my normal cleanup if you want.

Take care.
Steve

This is my normal post for when you are clean - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Here are some last minute instructions.

  • Download and run CleanUp and clean up all the junk we have left.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  • You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      7. Use an Anti Virus Software
        - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
      8. Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

      9. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

      10. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
      11. Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

      12. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

      13. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

steve, I just got back from the hospital, surviving a hip replacement.  I am too uncomfortable to sit at the key board.  But I will get at it. soon.

Steve,  This latest set of instructions is different and less complex than those of your original post which included a downloaded utility.

You need to remove MywaySA from control panel.  I tried several times but one item of dell4me remains in HijackThis.  I can block www.dell4me.com if need be.  Perhaps this is a help file and not related to Myway search.  Here is the log:

It's OK to leave that, nothing bad will happen.
