N T AUTHORITY ERROR

Question

Hello, I have Windows XP- home addition. First, my computer was acting funny in the chat rooms ( kept booting me out of them). Then it got worse............. booted me off line, and then I could not gain internet access at all. Then my computer semi- crashed ! I had received the NT Authority error many times,  and unfortunately was completely ignorant as to what it meant. When my computer came back up, I had lost all all contents of the Device Manager, and my icons were messed up, I lost yahoo messenger, and some other things. Being as I had lots of music and pictures on my hard drive, I did not do a complete system restore because I didn't want to lose all of that info. I tried to do a restore to a certain point and found that all of my previous restore points were now gone ?? I reinstalled the 3 of the CD's that came with my Dell computer ( for the drivers, modems, system tools, virus protection, internet software etc). Well, that lasted for a very short time before I lost all connectivity to the internet once again. Finally I followed the removal instructions for the NT Authority error ( blaster worm) as mentioned on your web site, ran the fixblast, and updated w/the patch from windows and restarted my computer. Fixblast said no worm was found ? My computer is still messed up pretty bad and lots of things are out of place still. Is there any way that I can get back previous restore points from system restore from before my computer crashed ?? And what is your suggestion for me now ? Am I going to have to do a complete system restore and lose everything on my hard drive ? Any advice will be appreciated.     Thanks, traci

Hello Mike,

I will try and do as you ask as soon as I get home tonight, as long as my computer allows me to stay connected for bit.

And I probably already "fixed" it really good :smileysad:

Traci,

We need to see more of what's running on your computer.

I need you to do the following:

Download HiJackThis (an anaylsis tool), unzip, then place it in it's own folder; like "C:\HJT". Run it, then click "Scan", then "Save log" (same button).
When Notepad comes up with the processes running on the pc, (within Notepad) click "Edit | Select all", then "Edit | Copy". Reply back to this message, then right-click in the message body and select "Paste"; post the message.
Close both Notepad and HiJackThis.

Don't 'fix' anything with it just yet, as most of what it reports is 'good'.
