If you prefer to do cleaning, we can start by looking for components involved:
Download HaxFix:
http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/haxfix.exe Save it to your desktop.
Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
Checkmark "Create a desktop icon".
Click "Next".
When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed.
Click "Finish".
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open.
Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open.
Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.
I've managed to delete the trojan, and a couple of back door items that showed up when I ran Norton in Safe Mode.
I think I'm lucky in that I used a different PC for online banking etc, and there is nothing in my e-mail history on this PC that contains bank numbers.
I have already changed passwords, but you also suggest a reformat.
Tony, if there were no passwords or account info on there, you do not have to reformat. We can just clean it.

Please disable your
Symantec Script Blocking from within your Norton so it does not interfere with anything during our fixes now or later. You can enable this whenever we have verified that your system is clean.
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
5. Click OK.
Run HaxFix as instructed above. Please post the log from Option #1 of HaxFix. Thanks.:)
Okay, now be sure that ScriptBlocking is disabled again.
Launch HaxFix again.
Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2, and then pressing Enter.
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
Close them, except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter.
The computer will reboot.
After reboot a logfile will open.
Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log.

Run
Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:

-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
You're welcome. The log is a little hard to read because of the text size, but it looks as if the bad file is gone.
There's just one empty registry entry left that you can fix with HijackThis:

If everything seems to be running smoothly after that, it would be good to flush System Restore in order to clear out those old Restore Points which may contain that infection.
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot.
Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
You may have already taken some of these steps: 1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
You need SP2.
Windows Update:

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.
6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.
If you have recently installed Ewido, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button
8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install
CCleaner and run it in each user's profile:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.
10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of
Java. The most updated version is jre-1_5_0_08.

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
5. Click OK.
Run HaxFix as instructed above. Please post the log from Option #1 of HaxFix. Thanks.:)

Okay, now be sure that ScriptBlocking is disabled again.
Launch HaxFix again.
Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2, and then pressing Enter.
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
Close them, except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter.
The computer will reboot.
After reboot a logfile will open.
Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log.

Got the message that 'no haxdoor or goldun' infections found, and exited the application.
Does this mean I'm clean?

Sorry but I don't get a logfile when I run option 2.
Haxfix gives me messages saying no infections found, etc and then automatically redisplays the Haxfix start menu

If you are sure that Script Blocking was disabled when you ran HaxFix Option 2 and you did not get the logfile, we won't spend time trying to get HaxFix to work.
Let's do this:
Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.
If not available, here is an alternate link for the download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download
Save it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.
Reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to these:

Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select: Delete on Reboot
Click on the Single File button.
Please copy the file path below to the clipboard by highlighting it; and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
Click the red-and-white Delete File button.
Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message.).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually into normal mode.
[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ]
If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply.
Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

There's just one empty registry entry left that you can fix with HijackThis:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
Then close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".
Reboot.
If everything seems to be running smoothly after that, it would be good to flush System Restore in order to clear out those old Restore Points which may contain that infection.
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. You need SP2.

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.
3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster:

4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.
If you have recently installed Ewido, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button
7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.
9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.

10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java. The most updated version is jre-1_5_0_08.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
