Need some advice/help

Question

Hello, I am new to these boards. I am hoping someone here can help me figure out what is going on with my computer. While I am literate w/ a computer, this whole virus thing is over my head. Like an idiot, I haven't updated Windows updates or McAfee updates for quite some time, thinking it wasn't neccessary. Lo and Behold, here I am. Anyway, it all started today when my computer suddenly froze up while I was checking baseball scored online. I Ctrl+Alt+Deleted it to close out Earthlink, thinking it was no big deal. Moments later, I cannot get back onto the internet. Try and try as I may, it will just sit there at the Initializing Screen when I go to sign on. This was quickly followed by a message telling me I had 30 seconds to get offline or whatever, and then it will restart. Ever since, it simply will not go past the login screen, or it will get to the Initializing part , and finally freeze. I tried logging on through Network Connections, but it gives me some junk about an incorrect password or user name, even though I have it saved in. My girlfriends laptop now runs incredibly slow, freezing for several seconds here and there, and it sounds like it is trying to access the Hard Drive or something, even though I am just sitting at the Desktop.After reading dozens of posts, I have found that hijackthis is a helpful tool, but I can't log onto the internet with that computer!  Any help would be very much appreciated, as my g/f is absolutely flipping out, as she depends on her laptop hand and foot for her classes. If you need any additional info, let me know. You probably need worm repair before we get to any HJT logs. See here:

Get the April 13th patch on a clean machine and burn to CDR along with one of the removal tools (Symantec or Mcafee)...turn off the Internet connection or broadband to infected machines...then apply patch from CDR. Then you can run the removal tool.

Plug back onto the Internet

Update AV and run a full system scan.

Post back if that doesn't work.

Thanks alot for your help Russ. This comp has a bunk disc burner, so I'll swing by my buddies house tomorrow and put all the goodies onto a CDR. I appreciate your help once again.

As you said, it worked like a charm. The McAfee stinger found the Sasser worm. I then ran spyware and found a few other things. Would there still be a point in running HJT, or will these additions along with an updated Windows and such pretty much clean it out? Thanks again for your help.
