New (?) files in C:
When I had problems with Add/Remove I started to run my Windows 98 CD through this PC but decided not. But, I inserted the CD and it said "gathering information of existing files". I hit 'Cancel' and aborted. Now, I was looking in my C; directory and I noticed what I think are 'new' files. They both have the same time of 'creation' down to the minute. One is named 'System.New', other is 'User.New'. Combined, they're over 7MB.
The properties just say Type 'File', Location 'C:\
I renamed both files, I removed .New from the end of them. I restarted the PC and it's running fine. There is one more file created within a few minutes of these, name is 'Winboot'...it's an .ini file. I'm not concerned about it. Could this be a coincidence, these files being created at the same time, and about the time I ran that CD? I'm not 100% positive (but pretty sure) I ran the CD on same date as these files were created, I know I never noticed these files before.
Have a good evening, and any info would help, thanks!

Those are temp files created by the install CD, and are removed after completion of the install, by aborting early they remained. Nothing to be concerned about, as long as your PC is functioning normally, however aborting a system install is a bad thing to try.

Thanks a lot! You're right about aborting an install.
I'll just delete those files. I need to have this Dell reformatted. I read where after a complete install those two files are renamed to 'System.dat' & 'User.dat'. I know this is probably a dumb thing to do, and shouldn't have even considered it last week, but I did run an 'over the top' install (Nov. '04) with my Windows 98SE CD. It's the only CD my sister had when she gave me the PC. It runs pretty good considering it's never been reformatted. It's a '99 Dell Optiplex G1 w/Pentium II 64 ram 350Mhz...that's all I know about it. I've learned a fair amount about a PC in the last 3 yr.'s, that's when I got this (first) one. I'm dyslectic, learn real slow. I'm looking at this site/link you provided - 'Malware Removal University'... gonna' check it out. I sure appreciate the reply, have a good day!
