Navymommie,

I'll open up the floor...

1) Check windows updates often, even if your computer is brand new.
2) An anti-virus/trojan program; keep it updated.
2) A Firewall; sofware and hardware (if possible).
3) Spyware busting software; pre and post scanners; keep them updated.
4) Watch where you surf.
5) Prompt for ActiveX and Java apps before allowing them to download and run.
6) Don't let unsigned ActiveX controls run.
7) Run scans weekly.

That seems like a lot, but let's see what other forum members suggest as well.

Mike.

If you are a Sams or Costco member you might take a look at McAfee software there.  I've found that they sell the software much cheaper than stores like Bestbuy or Circuit City and it often includes a rebate.  I would definitely recommend a firewall and antivirus combination.  There is also a free virus scan program offered at   http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/  .  I've had luck with that as well.  I've also learned a lot from posting and reading messages on this board.  I'd recommend using it......good luck.

Don't use Internet Explorer. There are too many holes in IE that can be exploit. Try Mozilla - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/.
