Norton Antivirus error message # 10

I am getting the message my virus protection is out of date and to run live update.  Then I get this message, Live Update failed while getting your updates. Internal error, symantec program not updated. Reinstall Live Update, then I get the Install Error # 10 Not able to register one of its components.  You need to have write access to the registary to install live update. My Norton renewal date is 10-12-2006. I am so lost and afraid I'm going to get viruses.  Please help !!
