Norton Internet Security 2006
I am so sick of NIS 2006 I could just puke! I have had my XPS system for ~8 months and have wanted to take the whole computer and throw it out in the middle of the road several times. Are there any other programs that will give anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection without a lot of fuss? On more than one occasion NIS has locked-up my computer, blocked mail, and in general slowed down my machine.
About 4 months ago an live update block all my e-mail and after hours and hours of running in circles on their web site I found that I needed to add all my sever addresses to the network area of the firewall. Now the e-mail scanners are locking-up every time I try to retrieve mail. So for, my only solution is to turn the stupid thing off to get mail.
I used to swear by Norton, now I swear at them!

Howdy
Welcome to the done wrong by Nortons club.
I now run Zonealarms security suite, whos antivirus is by Computer Assoc.
I am really happy with it.
Much faster boot & shut down times, no NAV does not support the repair feature,
no conflict with Word, etc etc
Getting rid of Norton can be a hassle, if you have trouble getting rid of it
there are several tools on Symantec's site to clear all of it off
If you need them, & can't find them, post back & I will find the link for them

Boy do I know what you mean. I wouldn't bore you with all the days (& nights) I've spent trying to make my computer work after downloading & installing Norton 2006. I must have run out of ink printing all the endless pages of instructions trying to make it work. I finally decided to try installing it from the CD which I haven't gotten up my nerve to try yet.
I have to now because I'm finally going to try high speed internet through my cable company. I didn't realize you had to uninstall your prior version of NIS? Somewhere in all those papers are instructions for uninstalling the version I downloaded so I guess the process would be the same? Then I think there's instructions for how to install in a tedious way. I sure hope it works.
I would welcome any tips or suggestions. I too have a Dell Dimension 4600 w/Windows XP & the Norton 2004 came with it. I had Norton prior on another computer & never had any problems. I wish when I called Customer Service I had asked for my money back because I'd try ZoneAlarm. I had to get on with life & haven't found a block of time to concentrate on all this so I'm not sure if too much time has passed since I got the CD to get my money back now.
Thanks,

Thing is I had to increase my Ram, because after installing NIS2006 my Dell started using virtual memory, so if you've got less than 512MB you're in trouble if you use alot of apps.
Kaspersky do an internet suite, heard good reports about it, but is on the large side - as suites tend to be.

Think you're right about the looks, also a huge package because it's a suite and does nearly everything.
With regard to the 'quality' of security software, the following link is to page on a site which tests security software:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=72&mnu=72
I would say that you should take these results with a pinch of salt, and google for results from other security evaluation sites.
it is an unfair test in some ways, for example trojan hunter is a dedicated to trojans, but gives a fair idea as to the performance of suites. I have used avast and AVG before, and never been infected, but I use anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software.

Thanks for all the info! I'm going to tackle the great un-install this weekend.
Another thing that happened in this Norton mess was something happened to my DVD drive. I used to be able to backup my Quicken to it just the same as if it were a floppy. I could write, delete, etc. Now it will only let me write but it won't write over anything either, it just keeps adding to the disk. It won't let me delete either. Has this happened to you or anyone else?
It's probably wishful thinking, but I hope once I un-install, it will go back to the way it was before.

Symantec Tool
Hope it works for you.
Be aware this tool is for specific NIS suites, as indicated on top of Symantec page, and you must use IE as it uses Active X controls.
