norton scanning

How often should one run a complete security scan?
I have the norton internet security 2005 antispyware edition installed and I think it recommends a complete scan be run at least once a week. Occasionally, I'll run a quick scan.
My only concern is that when the scans are run, I notice that there is a lot of physical activity going on inside the computer itself. Specifically, the whirring sound of the hard drive spinning and or the cooling fan running is kinda disconcerting.
Is this activity causing additional wear and tear on the aforementioned components.
It's really scary when the full scan is run and the noise can go on for almost an hour or so.
Please advise.
Thank you.

I believe this was answered on the other forums, but when it was moved the answers were lost.

Run it weekly, it's fine.  Do it when you watch TV or are asleep.
