Outlook not sending mail.

Hi there I desperately need someone's help!

My Outlook Office seems to be working fine on the surface, it can receive messages, but when I try and send anything it bounces back  with the message:

"Task pop.ntlworld.com sending reported error (0x8004210B) The operation timed out waiting for a response from the SMTP server."

I have spoken to my tech support line who were completely useless, I've tried removing the email acct and setting up a new one, and switching to Outlook Express (same problem occurs).

I really have no idea what to do, I've turned to the forums in the past and they've always helped, so, please, anybody...do youknow what I can do to fix it?! It's v.frustrating.

Just so you know, I run XP Home ed, SP2, Norton AV, Windows Firewall - and I've tried turning these on and off and the problem still persists!!!!

It's been like this now for about 2 days, I think it MIGHT have started after I was fiddling with Exceptions on the Windows Firewall, but I'm not certain...

...to misquote my favourite Princess 'Help me Dell Forums, you're my only hope!!!!!!!!!'

Chris Sealey,

Try this.  Start Outlook, go to Tools, then E-mail Accounts.  Select View or Change existing e-mail account, then Next.  Double click your email account, select More Settings.  In the Advance tab change server timeout from 1 minute to more.

This has worked for some people and may help you.  If not, you can always set it back to 1 minute.

To make sure it's not your firewall you can always temporarily turn it off.

your outgoing mail server address is incorrect. NTL world should have picked up on that. A 'Pop' address is incoming only, since you say you can receive messages your incoming server address is fine.

Go into Outlook, tools, Accounts, mail, properties, servers and look at the Outgoing mail server address. It should be something like 'smtp.ntlworld.com'

SMTP is the outgoing protocol. I dont use NTLworld so i cant confirm for sure for it should be but smtp should be in it somewhere, not pop.

Hope that helps

your email
Before you can send and receive emails using outlook express, you first have to set it up, (tell it what your email address is and where to find your emails) to do this follow the steps outlined below:
  1. Click on the tools menu and select accounts.
  2. From the menu select the mail tab
  3. Click the Add button, and select the mail option.
  4. Enter your name (This name will be displayed to people you email)
  5. Put the bullet point next to "I already have an e-mail address"
  6. Enter your ntlworld email address in the box provided (firstname.lastname@ntlworld.com)
  7. Select the mail server as POP3 and enter the following ntlworld mail server information.
  8. Incoming mail server : pop.ntlworld.com
  9. Outgoing mail server : smtp.ntlworld.com
  10. Click Next
  11. Enter your ntlworld account name & password in the boxes provided (Use small letters) eg:
    • Account name : firstname.lastname
    • Password : *********
  12. Click Next
  13. Click Finish

If that doesnt work, get onto NTL helpdesk
