Overlay Covers Desktop
I have a white overlay that covers my desktop. The icons are visible, but the desktop theme isn't. When the PC shuts down, the overlay quits and I can briefly see the proper desktop before the system shuts down.
Going into Safe Mode cures the problem, but I don't know what it is that caused it. Loading Windows with the diagnostic startup choice does not clear the issue. Only Safe Mode seems to fix it.
My screen size is normally 1024x768. If I go to 1280x1024, the white overlay only covers the previous 1024x768 part of the screen starting from the top left corner. The rest of the screen displays the normal background (theme).
I cleared approximately 100 or more malware programs from the PC using the usual suspects (Ad Aware, Spybot S&D and Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta). The machine runs much quicker than it did previously, so no complaints there. The real problem is this blank overlay that I feel is left over from some malware program.
I reinstalled the video drivers to no avail. I even disabled the built-in Intel video card, went to the standard adapter, and had Windows find it again after a reboot. Still have the overlay.
I don't want to wipe the system, but that looks like the next step. Comments or ideas? Thank you.

I have a similar problem: I had spyware, I downloaded MS AntiSpyware and got rid of it, but now I have a white overlay on my desktop in the upper left corner of the desktop. It is probably 3 icons tall by 3 icons wide. I can right click in the white box and click "select all", and then re-right click and it says "AIM Search", and when I click that, I get the AOL Search mainpage, but it is within that little box in hte upper corner of my desktop, and I can't get rid of it. Any help would be great. Thanks
