Hmmm... I have just had the red shield pop up Friday afternoon to alert me that there is a new PC-Cillin Update that is important to download. When I have tried to do so, and subsequently online tech rep doing same, as well as uninstalling, reinstalling, reboot, and trying download upgrade again with no luck. I still cannot download it.
The rep directed me to go to the PC-Cillin Dell Installed Software site to get a new product code/key to reinstall the program. Cannot do so until tomorrow during normal business hours. The Dell support tech said the code/key is corrupted is why it will not finish the download. I don't read French... lol... sorry, but I hope that is not a common issue when going to the PC-Cillin site for online tech support!
Maybe I will get back in the Dell online support first and let them know about your issue with the PC-Cillin site before I try that.
I`m still dealing with tech support from Trend Micro and I must say it`s WAY better than Symantecs support so far. I`ve dealt with Symantec now for about 6 years and the last issue I had sent Symantec concerning their product, I never got a reply!
Anyway, no fix yet and I`m still working with support. The keyboard stroke thing must be a web page issue as it has not typed french since! It`s ok anyways...I was born in Montreal Quebec Canada.
Hi.. Is the keyboard still acting up? Are strange things happening such as pop-up blockers blocking when they aren't supposed to be? If so, and you have a laptop, it could be your keyboard componet.
Another thing, when you first get to the Micro Trend Site, you have to pick your region... did you accidently pick a country/region that is primarily french speaking?
Just wondering... hope they can make everything right. My experience with Micro Trend was mostly positive!
And they resolved my issue after working with them.
The French issue is gone...actually it was only certain letters. I`m using a wireless keyboard and mouse on an XPS 420...not a laptop.
I get no messages whatsoever. When I click on 'Scan Now' the button greys out and then nothing...ever. No services running in task manager either. I downloaded the latest version of PC-cillin and updated it as well as per techs advice.
Probably a stupid question.. I am known for stupid questions, lol. I am sure you did and also the support tech, but you did uninstall the existing PC-Cillin program before installing?
It could possibly be that you need to start all over with the download with a new registration, like I did. It was aggravating but it resolved everything to do with the Dell PC-Cillin program issues. I am assuming to that this was a program installed by Dell when you ordered the PC, since you are posting on the Dell site.
Sorry to ask stupid questions.. but I am stilll learning a lot everyday.
Understood, but thank you... I don't take much like that personally anyway. I find this is a great place to help me learn different issues involving my Dell, 'Gremlin'. I want to try to understand not just the basic operation, but as much as I can learn.
Even if someone were to think I was asking a stupid question, it is not stupid to me, even if I worry it is.
I am actually not sure about something you said about deleting from the registry. I do not believe this was done in the course of the resolve for the issue. We only deleted out the of add/remove programs.
I have been told my husband and others that I should not mess with the registry or 'reg edit', because I could possibly remove key componets to the workings of the mother board/hard drive, etc. Don't even think I woud know how to find it.
It would be great if you could explain that to me... I would definitely appreciate it!
If you want to 'look' at the registry, just go to 'Start/run/(type in regedit)/enter. This will show you the registry. You can safely click on any tabs on the left side. If you`re running Vista it`s 'Start/All Programs/Accessories/run/(type in REGEDIT)/enter'.
I`m glad you didn`t read a negative into what I said......
Actually over all I have no complaints at all about Vista on my XPS420. I still can`t get Vista to remember passwords...no big deal. Even software that I used with XP seems to work.
As for the registry thing, yes....leave it alone unless someone you trust tells you what to do. It`s a confidence thing too. The registry is like the brain/heart of the wondows platform. The only thing I removed from the registry was anything to do with PC-cillin. It would not have hurt the computer at all. But, some people try to 'tweek' their system and accidentally remove vital registry keys which can cause fatal crashes! A re-install would be required.
8 years ago I knew nothing, absolutely nothing about computers or the internet. Though I have a decent handle on things now, I have lots to learn. Keep learning! It`s actually kinda rewarding!
Back to the PC-cillin problem.........I really don`t want to go back to Norton......
Is your machine exhibiting any signs of malware infection e.g. slow performance, unusual alerts, pop ups etc.? There are some infections which will disable antivirus software, from running at all or doing an on-demand scan. If so, read HOW TO POST A HIJACKTHIS LOG at the DCF "Software - HijackThis" board. Post your log along with a detailed description of the problems you're having and someone will be along to help you out as soon as possible. Please be aware that often there are not enough helpers to keep up, so please be patient.
Incidentally, if you're using the trial version of PC-cillin, or just can't get resolution, going back to Norton is not your only option. There are several very good and FREE antivirus programs available. There are several posts available on this board which review and rate the various freebies. :)

Well, it has been said that there really are no stupid questions....I`ve proven that wrong many times before!
Anyways, yes, I did uninstall as well as remove registry entries...a total and complete removal/reinstall. But thanks!

Thanks. I will do that soon. I have no issues other than the inability to scan. Actually, the XPS420 is doing quite well for speed!!
Thanks again.
