PC-Matic Reviewed

As a former user of Sunbelt's CounterSpy, I receive their newsletter. I've always respected the Sunbelt Blog, and the CEO Alex Eckelberry. When the latest newsletter promoted a product called PC-Matic, I naturally decided to try it:

20 Free PC Performance Reports. The World's Most Comprehensive PC Health Scan is Free http://www.sunbeltsecuritynews.com/FSBG1Q/091216-PC-Matic

This is a paid product associated with PC-PitStop. The scan indeed is free, the "fixes" will cost you money. Is it worth it?

The program installed easily, and the scan took only about 5 minutes. Here's what it found:

- The SpyCar test tool (mimics spyware, but is benign).
- 974 registry "fixes" (with all sorts of dire warnings about registry problems)
- an unnecessary startup item (qttask). A valid find.
- extreme fragmentation files (despite my use of Diskeeper 2009)
- a couple of drivers I could not verify needed updating.
- some TCP connection problems. (News to me!)
- All easily "fixed", for a price.

Conclusion:

This is a junk program. I am disappointed that Sunbelt is promoting it.

While Dell Community appreciates your information, it might be good to remove your first link. It is a violation of Dell's Terms of Use to post a link to a commercial site's paid product. Thank you. :emotion-1:

Your very first post valleyman77 and you come here extolling a product. :emotion-18:

From PC Mag:  "Installation on malware-infested systems required hours of remote-control by tech support. Just average malware cleanup. Antispam chokes on high-volume email downloads and misses a lot of spam. Default settings offer little firewall protection. Advanced firewall settings not fully effective and cause confusing popups."

"VIPRE Internet Security 2013 does a good job keeping out malware, and its ten-PC home site license is quite a bargain. It won't put a big drag on system performance, which is good. However, it's less effective cleaning up existing malware, and its firewall needs a total overhaul"

Did you step in something sure smells. PC-matic is [Admin note: Post edited per TOU policy.] I also use other products manually along with Vipre. Get a life. End of subject. :emotion-16:

One of the nice things about this forum is that members of Dell Community can share opinions and reviews on various security products. However, that needs to comply with the Dell Terms of Use.

JOE53,

I already scanned  my computer and downloaded pcmatic. I read a review like yours on cnNet, I believe, anyway what should I do. I deleted it and sent it to the bin. But is there anything else I should do?  I went looking for a coupon because the cost is $49.00, and I ran across your review and another review and it scared me. Am I okay now?

Thanks,

mercinabba
