Your Java application is out of date and causes a slight security risk as a result.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components
1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web
browser.
2. Click Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.
For those just reading this thread: Depending on your OS, you may have to click Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name (to highlight it) then click the "Remove" or "Change/Remove" button.
Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list. Repeat step 3 as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
**If you are asked to reboot at any point during the uninstallations, please do so. Then go back to Add/Remove and continue with the rest of the removals...when finished uninstalling all of them, reboot the computer.
4. Navigate to and delete:
C:\Program Files\ Java =this folderif found
5. Then go to
this page.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications"and click the "Download" button to the right.
6. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement"
the page will refresh and click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language. Save it to your desktop.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Please run HijackThis again and check the following:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = local., R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
Close all windows except for HijackThis then click
Fix Checked.
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log. Are you having problems with your Symantec installation?
Thanks for your help. I have followed your instructions and this is the new HijackThis log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 2:44:50 PM, on 9/25/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
There is no antivirus application running on your system. Neither do I see a third party firewall protecting you. Having no possible way of preventing the download and installation of any malware, it would be pointless for you to continue in your effort of cleaning the system until you install the appropriate protection software.
You have some remnants of an old Symantec installation still running but doing nothing but using resources and slowing you down. You should check the add/remove programs list (start-->control panel-->add/remove programs) and look for anything named
Symantec, Live Update, Live Registration, or Norton and click
Remove. Reboot when the uninstallation completes.
When the installation completes successfully, reboot the computer.
Other than that, your log looks ok except for one active X application that needs to go.
Please run HijackThis again and check the following:
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02) - ...then close all windows except for HijackThis and click
Fix Checked.
Reboot to properly record the changes made to the disk.
After these installations and uninstallations, removing things with hijackthis, your disk may be badly fragmented. Please run your normal clean up utility and defrag at this point.
Please post back and let me know how the system is running now and post a fresh HijackThis log so I can see the antivirus and firewall application running. I also want to make sure you were able to remove the old Symantec services that were left over from your previous uninstall. Thanks!
I really appreciate your help in this matter. Having a computer so slow has been driving me crazy. I have followed your suggestions and am posting the latest Hijackthis Log below. The reason I do not have an Anti-virus or Firewall is because I uninstalled Norton Anti Virus 2006 - it was slowing down the computer even more. I am not accessing the internet (surfing) or downloading any e-mails on the laptop - even this reply is from another computer. If you want, I can reload the Norton immediately.
The log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

Quote: "I am not accessing the internet (surfing) or downloading any e-mails on the laptop -

It certainly does sound to me that you truly do
NOT access the internet with THAT laptop. That being the case, I had to ask myself a couple questions:
"If this user is not accessing the internet then how were these programs obtained and what would this user possibly need them for without an internet connection?"
Yahoo Messenger Msn Messenger Skype Spybot Search and Destroy Yahoo Toolbar AutoCAD Startup Accelerator
Another application that got my attention is the usb driver software that is used for downloading shared files from within Napster to a portable MP3 player...
In fact, there are many many other tell tale signs that the computer DID at one time, access the internet.
After some consideration, I arrived at the conclusion that the laptop once upon a time, WAS used to access the internet but now it is just being used for personal business. That said, I feel the need to apologize for my assumption and misunderstanding.
Since you do not access the internet any more with that laptop, and speed is your only issue then let's uninstall all the other software that you don't need or use with the laptop and see if that resolves your issue.
Click start-->control panel-->add/remove programs...scroll down the list to locate these program names:
Yahoo Messenger Msn Messenger Skype Spybot Search and Destroy Yahoo Toolbar AutoCAD Startup Accelerator ...and click
Remove for each. Reboot the computer with each uninstallation and return to the add/remove programs list to finish removing all of them.
Using the laptop for just your own personal on board software programs (for your job I suppose?) is really a cake walk to clean up and get things moving faster for you. There are quite a few other programs and services that we can remove if the need still exists.
Post back and let us know exactly what programs you use with the laptop and we can reduce it to just the bare bones requirements for your particular needs. Let us know how the computer is running now and if you still feel the need to remove more software. Thanks!
Sorry - I have not been clear in what I meant. Ever since I started having the problem with the CPU running at 100%, I tried every Malware/Adaware program I know of to clean up the computer. I noticed that Norton was one of the programs always using some part of the CPU and so I uninstalled it. To be safe, I stopped connecting the laptop to the internet (but only till I resolve the problem). I will need to accuss MSN, e-mails, etc. as soon as the problem is fixed and so I will reload Norton at that time.
I see nothing in your log that would be causing a problem. Please post back after monitoring the task manager and let us know what process is using the CPU 100%.

You should check the add/remove programs list (start-->control panel-->add/remove programs) and look for anything named Symantec, Live Update, Live Registration, or Norton and click Remove. Reboot when the uninstallation completes.
Please select and install One of these free antivirus applications:
AVG Free for Windows
AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
Avast! 4 Home Edition
After successful installation, please reboot the computer.
Please select and install one of these free Firewall applications:
ZoneAlarm Free Version

Kerio
When the installation completes successfully, reboot the computer.
Other than that, your log looks ok except for one active X application that needs to go.

"I am not accessing the internet (surfing) or downloading any e-mails on the laptop - even this reply is from another computer."
It certainly does sound to me that you truly do NOT access the internet with THAT laptop. That being the case, I had to ask myself a couple questions:
"If this user is not accessing the internet then how were these programs obtained and what would this user possibly need them for without an internet connection?"
Yahoo Messenger
Msn Messenger
Skype
Spybot Search and Destroy
Yahoo Toolbar
AutoCAD Startup Accelerator
Yahoo Messenger
Msn Messenger
Skype
Spybot Search and Destroy
Yahoo Toolbar
AutoCAD Startup Accelerator
...and click Remove for each.
Thanks!

Msg: Expected fan on high RPM of 6300. Detected fan RPM=O
I think that this is probably causing the problem. I have asked Dell for advise.

Thanks for all your feedback. It seems that the fan on the Video card had stopped due to dirt. Dell fixed it and the laptop is up and running again.
