Hey MaryLab

Welcome to Dell Forums

Firstly there really is not a lot wrong with your Hijackthis Log.

Print the following instructions off as you will need to be offline

Run Hijackthis and with all windows closed put a check mark next to the following:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now Click "Fix"

Run Cleanup to empty all your
Temporary Internet Folders as Hijackthis and other programs
leave a lot of junk behind:

Post A New Log Back Here

Hey MaryLab

Well Done Your All Clean

Install these for safer surfing:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Update when downloaded, SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially dangerous sites in InternetExplorer.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html Update when downloaded.
SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites, that aren't actually innocent at all.

Check for updates for Windows and Internet Explorer every week or so. Download each critical update one by one, rebooting when necessary.. Repeat this until you get the message "no critical updates available"

Bertha2, my hero!

My icons are consistent and correct and everything else seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the help and additional advice.

I do have a question though. When I started this hunt I had recently updated to Norton Internet security and that was all I was running for security, besides the features in Windows XP. Now I have added spybot, Microsoft antispyware, and you are recommending 5 other download programs.  Should I be using all these, all the time?  Are there any conflicts? Thanks

Hey MaryLab,

Ok well SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard work alongside each other to prevent Spyware being downloaded onto your computer in the first place.

Microsoft Updates are importnat so keep checking for them as they are there to patch up flaws in Microsoft Windows.

The others I have recommended are also find to run alongside your exsisting programs.

However what I do not recommend anyone doing is running 2 Antivirus programs alongside each other as they can conflict, instead disable one and just use it when you want a second opinion.

Glad everything is fine now

Steve and Mike,
Thanks for checking anyway.  I took a look and figured the same!
