First: You're running HJT from a TEMP directory:

C:\DOCUME~1\GUOXUN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.000\HijackThis.exe

When you do so, either HJT will not create its log files and backup files; or if it does, you risk losing them when the TEMP's cache is cleared. It's important that you save these backup files, in case you have to "undo" [restore] some of the things you "FIX" incorrectly.

So you need to move HJT into a separate, non-temporary, non-Desktop, directory of its own. We recommend using the directory C:\HJT , so that it will then appear in your log, under running processes, as C:\HJT\HiJackThis.exe

**************

in NORMAL mode, Run HJT. click on DO A SYSTEM SCAN ONLY

Place a check-mark in the box in front of each of the lines:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinFixer2005] "C:\Program Files\WinFixer 2005\uwfx5.exe" /min

Click on FIX CHECKED. Close HJT. Reboot. And see if WinFixer comes back or not.

[If WinFixer is still there... i.e., if this highlighted O4-line still appears in your log after rebooting... then you should reboot your system into SAFE MODE (by tapping the F8-key during the boot-up process, and selecting SAFE MODE), and try this FIX again while running HJT in SAFE MODE; and then, reboot into NORMAL mode.]

When you're done, generate and post your latest HJT log, REPLYing to this thread.

Thanks very much for your help. I have relocated the HJT to C:/HJT, fixed the logs you mentioned and here is the new log I generate after rebooting the computer:

Nice work. Looks like we've successfully deactivated the bad WinFixer installer. Have you noticed any difference, in terms of WinFixer popups, and overall system speed/performance?

it appears you're running Sun Java j2re1.4.2_03 .   there is much speculation that a "hole" in this particular version is being exploited by WinFixer.   so we should upgrade to the latest version, 1.5.0_06 from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
my personal preference is to download the MANUAL (OFFline) installation version (16 MB).  but if you prefer the online installation, that choice is yours.

AFTER you successfully install the new java, go to your control panel, ADD/REMOVE programs, and UNinstalll all older versions of Java (if any) that still show up there.... especially the 1.4.2_03.

when you're done, REPLY here, and post an updated/revised HJT log.

At this point, I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might have. Please be advised that we're very "understaffed" at the moment, so I can't make any guarantee as to when  the next helper will arrive.

Let's continue on with the fix...

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments( prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the ' problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click " Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

WSup.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the ' prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the ' base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

CME II
GMT, GAIN or GATOR
MessengerPlus! 3
WinTools

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking " Start", then " Run...".
2. Enter " cmd" ( without the quotes).
3. Enter " services.msc" ( without the quotes).

Now, locate and ' stop' the following services, if present:

WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) owner ... ( C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WSup.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Thanks a lot for your advice! I have followed the steps and there are two problem,

1. I didn't delect all the MessengerPlus! 3 since I am currently using this application, is it nessessary to delete it?

2. There are several GMT files I cannot delete from the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT
Othere than that, the system is working fine and occationally have IE error reports.

Following is the log:

Hi

The log looks fine. The thing with MSN Messenger is it is bundled with unwanted programs.

My suggestion is to uninstall it and reinstall it and pay close attention to the boxes you check when installing it.

Don't tick any boxes except for the MSN Messenger only and you will be fine.

As far as that one file that won't delete, try doing it in Safe Mode.

After you uninstall and reinstall MSN Messenger follow these instructions and you are good to go!

This is my normal post for when you are clean - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Here are some last minute instructions.

  • Download and run CleanUp and clean up all the junk we have left.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  • You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    6. Use an Anti Virus Software
      - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
    7. Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

    8. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    9. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    10. Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

    11. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    12. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    13. This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
      Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

    14. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    15. Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

    16. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
    17. Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

    18. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    19. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

      Steve
