PLEASE HELP!!! Winfixer problem, have HJT log file...

Question

Hello,     I turned on my computer today and Winfixer window randomly popped up for first time ever. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete and closed out the browser (IE) so as to not click on the pop up window. After doing this, I got back in the browser and it popped up again after about 5 mins. Did same method. Another window popped up from pcsecurityshield. com and I did the same method. This winfixer window and pcsecurityshield. com window have been popping up at different times and its hard to tell if it is removed because of that. I also have Ad-Aware SE Personal and ran all types of scans. It found a virus (I forget the name of it) and I deleted it. I then ran a full system scan using Symantec's Anti-Virus Corporate Edition and it found nothing (probably because Ad-Aware was run first). I then downloaded the VirtumundoBeGone tool (both of them) and the summary after the scan stated that it found a Trojan.Vundo virus and it deleted it. I also downloaded Microsoft's AntiSpyware Beta 1 program from Microsoft's website and ran it but it found nothing. I then downloaded HijackThis v.1.99.1 and ran it and got the following log file... it appears you're running Sun Java j2re1.4.2_03 .   there is much speculation that a 'hole' in this particular version is being exploited by WinFixer.   so we should upgrade to the latest version, 1.5.0_06 from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp my personal preference is to download the MANUAL (OFFline) installation version (16 MB).  but if you prefer the online installation, that choice is yours.   AFTER you successfully install the new java, go to your control panel, ADD/REMOVE programs, and UNinstalll all older versions of Java (if any) that still show up there.... especially the 1.4.2_03. *************** for your WinFixer/vundo problem, based on the line: O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {3FE36807-69ED-45D1-B9BE-85C0E3F75B6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsr.dllyou should try following the information given here: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_hijack&message.id=16923 When you're done, copy/paste your updated HJT log by REPLYing to this thread.

Please notice the O2 and O20 lines. This is the file I selected to "FIX." Is this file supposed to be completely removed or will it forever say "(file missing)"? I have not had any pop-ups since the fix however as I mentioned earlier, the pop-ups were not that frequent before I "FIXED" it using the program from Atribune. I DO think the problem is fixed because I have noticed a faster boot-up! The same speed that it took before I had the problem. So I think it's off (knocking on wood!) Also, if you think this problem is solved, should I delete all of the programs that I downloaded to fix this problem (such as HijackThis, VirtumudoBeGone tool, etc...)? If not, please indicate the ones I NEED to keep and the ones that can be deleted (if any). Also, do you know how this winfixer problem got on my computer so that I can avoid making that mistake again. Sorry about all of the questions, I'm just making sure! Thanks Again!

Looks like the VundoFix successfully removed the bad WinFixer/Vundo file

However, as you've noticed, your HJT log still shows some (non-critical) "remnants" of it [the o2 & O20 "file missing"], which HJT should be able to remove now:

Run HiJackThis. click on DO A SYSTEM SCAN ONLY.

Place a check-mark in the box in front of each of the lines:

O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {3FE36807-69ED-45D1-B9BE-85C0E3F75B6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsr.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtsr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsr.dll (file missing)

Click on FIX CHECKED. Close HiJackThis. Reboot. And then generate/post another updated/revised HJT log, REPLYing to this thread. Hopefully, these two lines will have "disappeared" completely by then.

At that point, I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might have. Please be advised that we're very "understaffed" at the moment, so I can't make any guarantee as to when the next helper will arrive.

as for the programs, it's certainly a good idea to keep HiJackThis around.... both because you may need to use it again in the future, should you have (this, or) another problem. moreover, HJT creates a "backup" file with all the changes you make using it... so that, if you ever decided to UNdo/restore something, you'll be able to do so through HJT. (the only time you'll need to download HJT in the future is when/if they issue a new version of it.)

as for VirtumundoBeGone (or any other tools you download at our suggestion), most of them are small enough that you shouldn't have to worry about disk space. i'd suggest you create folder for "virus and malware fixes", and keep them all handy there.... as i said with HJT, you'll never know when it might come in handy. while VBG didn't work in your case (because the ATLDistrib object is a brand-new version of WinFixer), its author has advised me of his intent to bring out a newer version "soon" [of course, you'll need to obtain the updated version at that point]

Hello Again,

OK I ran the HijackThis program again and did what you advised. From my log posted below, you can clearly see that those O2 and O20 lines that we were talking about are gone!!! I will also create a folder for all of the programs I got so I know where they ALL are in case this happens again (hopefully not!) So I guess the problem is FULLY fixed and the system is as good as new! Here is my updated log...

Just wanted to say thank you so much! I was reading another post before I created my own and I saw in the other post that you guys/gals were understaffed and you restated that in this post. i did not analyze your entire log ---- rather,   i specifically looked only for WinFixer, found it, and we fixed it.   I then e-mail 3 colleagues, asking them to continue with the complete analysis process.   when one of them arrives here to continue, they will advise you if you're 'fully clean', or if they see anything else that needs to be taken care of.  i hope that's clear enough this time.

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.

If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating. There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:
