Post Trojan Issues

Several weeks ago my system was infected by a Trojan via Spyware.  I ran both an antivirus and antispyware program but continue to have "system issues.  1) System runs very slow vs. what I had before the current problem.  Even something as search Explorer for "My Computer" can take almost two minutes, system shutdowns 3-5 minutes, etc.  2) I also get two consistent error messages at start up a) Generic Data Execution Prevention (DEP) whereby Windows is closing some program (??)  Closing this 2-3 times and filing an error report with MS bypasses the problem. b) At start up and initiation of programs I also get the following error:

Svchost.exe – Application Error

The instruction at “0x00ad6f9a” referenced memory at “0x00000000”.  The memory could not be “written.”

Click on OK to terminate the program

Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Can anyone help?

Thanks very much

Timemgr,

Start by running system file checker from a command prompt:

sfc /scannow

...and see if any system files need to be replaced.

-

Also, post up a HiJackThis log for analysis.

Thanks Mike.  I will try the scannow step.  Not clear to me what you mean by "post up a HiJackThis log for analysis".

Timemgr,

Sorry about that ... :)

-

Let's see what's running on that system; post up a HiJackThis log for analysis.

Download, then unzip to " C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.0. Now, let's do the following:

1. Click " Scan"
2. Click " Save log"

Notepad will pop-up with a copy of your system long, then:

1. " Edit | Select all"
2. " Edit | Copy"

Next, let's " Reply" back to this post, then:

1. Right-click on the message body.
2. Select " Paste"

Then just " Post" the message, and we'll analyze your log shortly, then post back any recommendation(s).

Timemgr,

Is your entire system slow, or do all those errors relate only to Internet Explorer?

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ms101.mysearch.com/sa/srchlft.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp_wave/defaults/su/*http://www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: MyWay Search Assistant BHO - {04079851-5845-4dea-848C-3ECD647AA554} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\SrchAstt\1.bin\MYSRCHAS.DLL (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Go to "Event Viewer" and check under the application and system sections for any error or warnings. If you see any, right-click one, and select "properties". That might help in understanding what's causing the problems.

Mike:  I will rerun Hijack This and follow the directions.  Internet explorer is a problem but launching any application seems to take forever as do shut downs.  Sometimes it seems like up to 5 minutes.

Timemgr,

How's your total/available memory and page file size looking? Are they running low? When you check the "performance" tab on "Task Manager", are they're any tasks that are using an excessive amount of cpu time?

Mike:

I "fixed" the files per your previous note using "HijackThis" but continue to have the same "memory can not be read" error.

Total Memory is 1GB, available memory is though little more than half that (is that possible?).  Page file size is 468 MB.  Can't say that any task is using a significant amount of memory from what's on the list.  The numbers constantly change - largest looks to be System Idle process at CPU (time?) of 99.

What though are "Processes"?  Some of these look to consume a relatively large part of memory usage:  taskmgr.exe 5, 440K, waol.exe 5,704 K, CCAPP.EXE 10,060K, Spysweeper.exe. 15,100K, explorer.exe 10,088K the iexplore.exe 38, 064K, svc host  13, 850K (which actually is causing me another problem -see below.  I actually have several svshost.exe files the former is "System", but I also have 2 svshost entries @1540K and 2276K under Network Service ,   I also have an antivirus and spyware sweeper that consume a significant amount of memory When I boot up the computer I get the following error message:

Generic Host Process for Win32

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encounted a problem and needed to close.

This error occurred on (date) at (time).  This occurs 3- 4 times and goes away - at least to the next boot up.

Timemgr,

Those item(s) we're primarily cleanup; see need to see if windows can locate a missing or damaged component of your operating system - maybe that's what's causing the problem.

Try entering this from a command prompt:

sfc   /scannow

That will scan your system files for any problems, then try to reinstall them from your windows installation diskette if need be.

Also, go to "Event Viewer" and look under "application" and "program" sections for any warnings or errors being reported. If you see any, right-click on them, then select "properties", that  might provide more information on what might be causing the problem.

Hi Mike:

I re-ran the sfc  /scannow and nothing came up this time either.

The Event Viewer contains a number of errors - but all similar to the one presenting the problem I posted initially.   "Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0 fault address 0x00ad6f9a.  The next line provides a link Windows website which provided no resolution/help but a note:

If an error report was generated for this error, you might be able to obtain more information about the error by sending the report to Microsoft for analysis.

I do have another DCOM error as well.

Timemgr,

It almost sounds to me like the infection has modified some of the system files, or at least their startup parameters and that might be what's causing the problem.

Let's see what this scan might reveal...

Download mwav.exe from MicroWorld, then:

1.  Double-click the mwav.exe icon to run it ( it'll self extract).
2.  Click " Scan".
3.  When it completes, post back the results from the 'Virus log information' pane.

We might need to try a repair (in-place) installation of the operating system, instead of a clean install to try and preserve your personal files already on the system drive.

Mike, sorry for the delayed reply - I have been on the road.  Running the mwav.exe resulted in interesting findings.  The following 2 notes were posted in the "Virus log Information":

File C:\WINDOWS\system32\KILLAPPS.EXE tagged as not-a-virus:RiskWare.Tool.KillApp.b. No Action Taken.

File C:\DOCUME~1\STEVES~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD1.tmp\ez-tracks.exe infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.BetterInternet" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

Note the second one has reference to "ez-tracks.exe.   This was the "ad ware" that my daughter downloaded with the promise of "free music" that was the beginning of all the my current problems.  My computer is only 6 months old.

Although it did not show up in the Virus Log information I noted from the "full log" another file related to ez-tracks:

File C:\DOCUME~1\STEVES~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD1.tmp\ez-tracks.exe

Timemgr,

Sorry for not getting back with you - i've been out for almost a full week.

-

Let's me see a fresh log and see if we're still in the clear, so we can do the final cleanup, which should remove those files in a 'temp' folder. I'm not sure what this file is for. We can rename it to something else, like:

ren    C:\WINDOWS\system32\KILLAPPS.EXE      C:\WINDOWS\system32\KILLAPPS.EXE_hold

...then wait to see if anything misses it. If after a week or so, nothing misses it, you should be able to safely delete it.

Mike.
